BEAU PERE WINNERS

TAURANGI AND GAY SON ; TRENTHAM SUCCESSES Of considerable local interest is the success of Taurangi in the Taita Handicap at Trentham on Thursday, for she is owned by Mr. W. McA. Duncan and is trained by D. T. Marks, at Fordell. At the Trentham sales last January Mr. Duncan carried the bidding to 525 guineas for this Beau Pere—Barbacan filly, whose dam, by Top Gallant from the Spearmint mare Columbia, is a sister to the V. R. C. Oaks winner Barbette. Barbacan herself won several races for Mr. John Donald in a very light season on the race-track. As Thursday’s race was Taurangi’s first appearance with the colours up, it was a feather in the cap of the Fordell trainer and there appear to be more good races in view for the Beau Pere filly. Taurangi’s success would also make pleasing reading for Mr. M. Grogan, at the newly-established Grange Stud, for a yearling full-sister to Taurangi is to be submitted at the Trentham sales next January on his behalf, and Barbacan also has at foot a colt foal that ranks as full brother to Taurangi.

Another Beau Pere success was that which was registered by Gay Son in the Wellesley Stakes, for this youngster is the colt out of La Moderne who won the Nursery Handicap at Masterton from the Beau Pere filly Peerless. Gay Son is reported to have finished on in splendid style and good judges express the opinion that his defeat of the Debutant Stakes winner Surmount was full of merit.

The Beau Pere two-year-olds are doing so well in New Zealand, besides impressing in Australia, that it is certain that there will be keen competition for the Beau Pere yearlings next January. Besides Gay Son and Taurangi, other Beau Pere two-year-olds that have won—all since September 25—are Amigo, Arvakur and Sudan. The fact that the Grange Stud will have some Beau Pere yearlings to offer also calls to mind the decision of Mr. Sol Green, the well-known Victorian breeder, to send his Solario horse, Lo Zingaro, across to Mr. Grogan’s establishment for six months’ spell. This week confirmation of the cabled decision was received and it is expected that the stallion will arrive in a couple of weekss’ time. It is interesting to note that Lo Zingaro (Solario—Love in Idleness), carried Mr. J. A. Dewar’s colours into third place behind Windsor Lad and Tiberius in the St. Leger of 1934—n0t last year, as has been erroneously stated—and later was purchased by Mr. Sol Green at ll.OOOgns. He will thus be the most expensive stallion ever to come to New Zealand.

RANGITIKEI RACING CLUB MEETING AT BULLS ACCEPTANCES ON TUESDAY Some more interesting racing on the West Coast circuit should be provided next Saturday, when the Rangitikei Racing Club's one-day spring meeting will be held. Acceptances will close at 9 p.m. on Tuesday Advice has been received that Donegal will not be a contestant in the Sandon Hurdles, in which he was allotted 11.9. As he has been scratched for the event no rehandicap has been issued following his win at Trentham.

Another defection is Prevail, who will not be started in the Ohakea Handicap owing to suffering an injury during the week.
