TRENTHAM RACES WELLINGTON MEETING STAKES DAY” FIELDS REVIEW OF PROSPECTS With the holiday crowds likely to attend at Trentham to-day and on Monday, the Wellington Racing Club's spring meeting should be continued under the happiest auspices, and the totalisator turnover should again register large increases. Given tine weather, to-day's turnover should top £50,000, and as over £60,000 was handled last Labour Day, the iigures on Monday should again be of generous proportions. Last year the aggregate for the meting was just over £133,000. Excellent acceptances have been received, though apparently the presence of Smoke Screen and Royal Chief has had its effect on the Trentham Stakes held. The track promises to be in 'great order again, and some keen and interesting racing will be witnessed. Trackman is one of the newcomers in the Rimu Hurdles, the opening event, but Donegal and Journet should again be in the picture. One of the toughest races will be the Trial Stakes, though the field has dwindled down from tne large list of over sixty nominations. White Gold, who won so impressively at Wanganui, promises to be the favourite, and Happy Heels, Rockingham, Mishna, Sigurd, Conversion and Relative may include the placegetters.

Smoke Screen and Royal Chief are likely to fight out their Great Northern Guineas battle again in the Trentham Stakes, but in the small field it may be a battle of tactics between B. H. Morris on Smoke Screen and L. J. Ellis on Royal Chief. The topweights appear to dominate the issue in the Heretaunga Handicap, run over a mile and a-quarter. Siegmund can win only the one race before going out of hacks, though he can run out hrs nominations. Liane is in good form and Quadroon and Lazybones will have many friends. The class in the Kantane Handicap is not so strong as it was in the Wellesley Stakes, but some high-class youngsters are engaged, and as Amigo was considered one of the unlucky contestants on Thursday this Beau Pere gelding may be selected to account of Minga and a likely improver In Peerless. Perhaps the pace may not be as hot in the Watkins Handicap as it was in the Wellington Handicap on Thursday, when Cuddle nearly had the rest of the field tied up. Argentic, Hunting Cat, Shy, Cerne Abbas, Boomerang and Sunee may be prominent candidates. Paper Slipper was the unlucky sprint contestant on Thursday, being down on his knees when he stumbled crossing on to the course proper, so he must be respected in the Awatea Handicap. Two that should extend the topweight arc Ben Braggie and Oratory. The Bigot put up such a good perfgormance on Thursday that he will be again in request, though he will have to do his best to hold off Lucullus Lad and Middle. The following may be well-backed candidates to-day:— Rimu Hurdles.—Donegal, Journet, Trackman. Trial Stakes. —White Gold, Happy Heels, Rockingham. Trentham Stakes.—Smoke Screen. Heretaunga Handicap.—Siegmund, Liane, Lazybones. Karitane Handicap.—Amigo, Minga, Peerless. Watkins Handicap.—Shy, Hunting Cat, Arctic King. Awatea Handicap.—Paper Slipper, Ben Braggie, Oratory. Belmont Handicap.—The Bigot, Lucullus Lad, Middle. Following is the list of acceptances: RIMU HURDLES
