STUD SOUTHDOWNS
Recent importations of stud Southdowns have included two notable rams—one from England and the other from Australia—selected and purchased through the agency of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, on behalf of Mr. Walter Price, of Feilding, and Messrs. E. G. Goulter and Sons, of Fitzherbert West.
Mr. Price’s ram, “Aldenham 355 of 1936,” was bred by Mr. J. Pierpont Morgan, “Wall Hall,” Aldenham, Watford, Herts., England, and is by ‘ Head Hone Major” (22963) out of “Aldenham 164 of 1934.” Described bj experts, who inspected the animal on arrival, as an outstanding ram with splendid constitution, and nice colour, standing square’y on short legs he gives every indication of being a prepotent sire, naving stud appearance ind is bold and active witn plenty of vitality. The ram purchased by Messrs. E, G. Goulter and Sons, of Palmerston North, is “Mundarra 109 of 1935,” bred by Mr. C. C. Dane, of Victoria. This ram was awarded the championship at the recent Melbourne Royal Show, being placed at the head of over ninecy rams competing from the leading studs of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. An evenly fleshed and well-balanced sheep, nis head is particularly good and he has a perfect fleece of true Southdown wool. His sire, imported by Mr. Dane, from England, is “Aldenham 822 of 1932,” and a number of other lams and ewes by this animal also scored notable successes in the other sections of the Royal Show, all of them being quality sheep showing evenness of type together with splendid heads and carcases.
