CAULFIELD CUP

COMMENT ON THE RACE SIR REGENT UNLUCKY SYDNEY, Oct. 21. The Herald’s Melbourne correspondent, commenting on the Caulfield Cup, says: “Although The Trump had a wide barrier position, he was gradually taken in and from the mile post had a good passage. Sir Regent made an extraordinary run, as near the half-mile he had only three or four horses behind him, one of them being Floodtide, but at. the top of the straight he was passing horse after horse. The Trump seemed likely to win comfortably as he reached the lead, but Sir Regent made a spurt that brought him level in the last stages. However, The Trump stayed better than Sir Regent and beat him off. Silver Standard had every chance but weakened in the last fifty yards. Manolive hung on well to finish fifth, but his performance was not as impressive as that of Floodtide, who was among the stragglers little more than half a mile from the post. Then he got going, and to finish sixth, even allowing for the number of tired horses he passed, was no mean performance. The Telegraph’s correspondent says that Sir Regent must be considered the unlucky horse of the Caulfield Cup. He was left three lengths at the start and later met two checks. TALKING BREAKS DOWN RETIREMENT TO STUD. SYDNEY, Oct. 21.
