WAVERLEY RACES

LABOUR DAY MEETING GOOD HOLIDAY CARD Racegoers who intend to spend the Labour Day holiday at Waverley for the annual meeting of the Waverley Racing Club have a good holiday programme promised them, for the fields throughout are of an even nature, though the open sprint and the Waverley Cup fields are rather thin. Still, it should be an interesting day’s racing, and provided the weather is fine there will be a big holiday crowd. For railway jwtrons there will be special excursion fares and special trains. A special train, stopping where required for passengers, will leave Wanganui at 9 a.m. on Monday, Aramoho 9.12 a.m., arriving at the Waverley racecourse at 10.47 a.m. The return train leaves the racecourse at 5.30 p.m. and is due to arrive at Wanganui at 7.15 p.m. The totalisator at Waverley will be operated on the single-pool system, with dividends on the basis of 75 and 25 per cent, respectively for first and second horses where there are five or more starters. The handicaps were declared by Mr. H. Coyle. The official at the starting barrier will be Mr. M. Crimmins, who has proved so successful in the South Auckland circuit, and Mr. A»Tronson will be in the judge's box. The order of the events, with the starting times, is as follows: 12.0—Hack Hurdles. 12.45—Brewer Handicap. 1.30 Morton Memorial Maiden. 2.ls—Wilson Hack Highweight. 3.o—Waverley Cup. 3.4s—Moumahaki Stakes. 4.30 Jackson Memorial Stakes. The dry spell which has affected most tracks has not been to the detriment of the Waverley tracks, which are reported to be in excellent order. For instance, one of the Cup candidates. Reipar, was taken through from Wanganui to take advantage of the good tracks at Waverley, though he is back again. Two other Cup candidates are trained by G. A. Reid at Waverley, these being Gold Mission and Race Boy, the latter carrying Mr. Reid’s colours. Green Timber, though down in the card as being trained by his owner, Mr. T. at Waverley, has done a good deal of his training at Wanganui, where previous winners in recent years in Fernden and Korokio have been trained Friesland is the topweight and is stated to be a certain starter.

At New Plymouth on Tuesday morning Friesland was going very comfortably alongside of Naughty Marietta at the end of six furlongs in 1.18 3-5. As usual Friesland had a lot in. reserve. Friesland is in great shape for the Waverley Cup in which he will be ridden by the stable apprentice L. Monkley.

Master Limond, accompanied by the Sandstar mare from Brough's stable over the last half-mile, completed six furlongs in 1.19, the halfmile taking 514. Master Limond has come through his Masterton racing m good trim and is to start in the Waverley Cup. His owner-trainer holds hopes that Master Limond may sui prise if a strong rider can be secured.

Yesterday morning Airing, who claims an engagement in the Brewer Handicap and another in {he Moumahaki Stakes, was sent along six furlongs, being clocked home in Imin. 16 4-ssec. It may be noted here that Airing is an older half-brother, by Cockpit ,to Rakahanga, the Gascony— Mori lilly who linished second to Taurangi in the Talta Handicap at Trentham yesterday. Airing has an excellent record.over the past twelve months, and at the Waverley meeting last year he was a good winner. Two more Waverley candidates in All Spirit and Captain Treville, both trained by L. G. Butler, were given a run yesterday morning over six furlongs on the course proper and took Imin. 16 l-ssec., the first three furlongs being covered in 36 2-ssec. Lady Hoariri, Green Timber and Cyclopean also did useful work. VICTORIAN TRACKS FLEMINGTON MEETING DEATH OF SON O’ MINE MELBOURNE, Oct. 21. Balkan Prince’s shoulder trouble is expected to be all right for the Melbourne Cup. Galloping on the course proper, with the poles 33ft. out, Ajax beat Dark Sky comfortably over a mile in 1.45, the first four furlongs taking 51sec. John Wilkes went extra well, doing ten furlongs in 2.124, the last four taking 54sec. Mestoravon easily beat Gay Knight over four furlongs in 54isec.
