PASSING OF A GENTLEMAN

THE DEATH OF MR. C. W. POYNTER HOSPITAL BOARD'S TRIBUTE At a meeting of the Wanganui Hospital Board held recently, Mr. W. E. Broderick, chairman, made feeling reference to the sudden passing of Mr. C. W. Poynter, who had been a member of the board for many years. Although Mr. Poynter had passed the allotted span he was a wonderfully alert and able man and would be missed from the board table and also as a citizen of high standing in the city, Mr. Broderick stated. Members of the board would feel that they had lost a valuable colleague and friend. Fully endorsing Mr. Broderick’s remarks, Mr. A. S. Coleman said that Mr. Poynter had gained the confidence of every member of the board and was a gentleman in every respect. Mrs. J. J. Scott said that, during depression years, Mr. Poynter had been a friend in no uncertain manner. In the operation of her Sunshine Club she had seen another side of his activities that was perhaps unknown to many. She esteemed him a gentleman whose place it would be difficult to fill.

Mr. R. Farley confirmed the remarks of others and stated that he had known Mr. Poynter many years before he came to the board table. He realised that the hospital board, and other bodies with which Dlr. Poynter was connected, had lost one who was willing to give and take, which was a very fine attitude in a public man. A motion of sympathy was carried in silence, members standing.
