HITHER AND THITHER

Special Free Programme. At the Majestic Theatre this morning, at 11 a.m. and 11.30 a.m., there will be a free screening of “Down Through the Ages,” a talkie film produced for General Motors, Ltd., the makers of “Frigidaire,” which shows the methods of food preservation. All interested are invited to attend. Friends Entertained.

Prior to leaving for Pukekohe, where they will make their future home, Mr. and Mrs. John Miller, of Durie Hill, entertained a number of friends at a bridge evening last Thursday. The evening was further enlivened with competitions and games. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Wildbore, Mr. and Mrs. T. Welsh, Mr. and Mrs. N. Paul, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Calcott, Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Cooke, Mr. and Mrs. W. Wyber, and Mr. Dixon.

A Visitor’s Views. Mrs. J. Wolstenholme, who is returning to West Maitland, New South Wales, after attending the Coronation and visiting every capital city on the Continent, arrived in Auckland by the Niagara on Monday. The highlights of her trip were an audience with the Pope and an introduction to Mussolini. Mrs. Wolstenholme told an interviewer that all the beggars in Italy have disappeared, the people all have work, and the slums are rapidly being demolished and many fine buildings have been erected. Both Italy and Germany are armed camps and soldiers are to be seen day and night. There was no freedom of speech or even of thought in either country, particularly in Germany, and the people were ruled entirely by fear. The visitor also said that both countries were obviously not only preparing for war, but were actually living for it.

To Say Farewell. The final of a series of farewell functions for Mr. and Mrs. John Miller, of Durie Hill, who have left to take up residence at Pukekohe, was held at the home of Mrs. G. C. Wildbore, “Otamatata,” Durie Hill, on Tuesday afternoon. The sliding doors between the drawing and breakfast rooms were opened, making a large room for the party. Vases of ranunculus in varying shades were attractively arranged in the rooms. The hostess was gowned in Princess Mary blue. In presenting Mrs. Miller with a gift of crystal, Mrs. E. B. Cooke expressed the good wishes of a large circle of friends. Peter and Joan Miller each received a parting gift. Among those present were Mesdames Calcott, W. Wildbore (Feilding), Channa (Te Awamutu), Ogier, Welsh, E. B. Cooke, N. Paul, W. Wyber.
