WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

OKOIA MEETING. Dlrs. Gray presided over a good attendance of members at the October meeting of the Okoia Women’s Institute, which proved to be a particularly enjoyable and sociable gathering. The usual business was transacted. Correspondence included the agenda for the forthcoming halfyearly council meeting at Westmere, for which Mrs. Gardner and Mrs. O’Donnell were appointed reporting and voting delegates respectively.

Parcels and donations wre received for the Makogai lepers. Mrs. L. Wilson judged the points competition—plain scones —for which there was an especially large number of entries, and which resulted: Mrs. Gray 1, Mrs. Claire 2, Mrs. Aitcheson 3. A competition—untying knots—arranged by Mrs. W. Wright, was won by Mrs. Graham. “Hair-pin work” was ably demonstrated by Miss Munro, who was heartily thanked for her trouble.

Mrs. W. Wright gave the last of her delightful series of short travel talks, dealing with the voyage from Malta to England, with a description of the arrival at Southampton and the efficiency of the customs officials. Last month’s talk by Mr. Jones was on the growing of dahlias, not daphne, as reported.

The next meeting will be an open evening on the first Thursday of next month, which will take the form of a social and dance, for which a good programme has been arranged and which, it is hoped, will prove as popular and enjoyable as the previous one. MEETING AT KOHI Mrs Morrison presided over the October meeting. There was an excellent attendance. It was decided to send two delegates to the Westmere meeting. An interesting demonstration on the making of velvet flowers was given by Mrs Morrison. The competition, nut toffee, resulted: Mrs Waterland I, Mrs Clinch 2. The hostesses, Mrs C. and W. Oliver, served a delicious afternoon tea. FLOWER SHOW AT SILVERHOPE The Silverhope Women’s Institute held their usual monthly meeting and flower show in the Rata Hall on Wednesday, October 13. There was a fair attendance of members, while it was pleasing to see quite a number of visitors present. The meeting opened with the Smile, Song and Creed. The business was then dealt with in detail, after which members gathered round for the social half-hour recess. Mrs Williams gave an interesting lecture on the correct procedure for the planting of dahlias and gladioli, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The flower show resulted as follows:—Primroses: Mrs Aidworth 1, Mrs Signal 2, Miss Nesbit 3. Polyanthus: Miss Nesbit 1, Mrs Doole 2, Mrs Aidworth 3. Pansies: Mrs Morton j.. Mrs Aidworth 2, Mrs Signal 3. Violas. Mrs Signal 1. Wallflower: Mrs Doole 1. Bulbs (three varieties): Mrs Aidworth 1 and 2. Specimen Bulb: Mrs Aidworth 1. A successful afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem. The competition for the next meeting, which will be held in the Silverhope School on November 10, is the best dressed doll for Christmas tree and premier bloom.
