WOMEN'S . DIVISION

HANDWORK AND HOBBIES DISPLAY. A very successful display of handwork and hobbies was held yesterday by the Wanganui branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. There were competitive classes as well as handcrafts lor exhibition only. Mrs. S. Scott, president of the branch, and the committee members must have had a very busy time classifying and arranging the articles, which were viewed by a -large number of people. The Mayoress (Mrs. W. J. Rogers), who was introduced by the president, thanked the division for giving her the privilege of opening the exhibition, and congratulated the branch on the line display of articles. She said that women's organisations were helping women to keep up the standard of handwork and crafts and it was a good thing to let the public see what the women were doing. Mrs. Rogers expressed the hope tnat the exhibition would be well patronised.

Mrs. A. H. McLean, president of the provincial executive, took the opportunity of announcing that next Wednesday they would have the pleasure of having with them the Dominion president, Mrs. Drake, when all members were requested to be present to meet her. Afternoon tea was served at small green-clothed tables placed at one end of the room. Mrs. Soundy, the tea convener, was assisted by helpers. Among the articles for exhibition only was a 70-year-old christening robe, all done by hand sewing. There was a piece of hand-woven linen over 100 years old, and another interesting exhibit alongside was a piece of a ball dress worn before the Indian Mutiny. It was self-patterned brocaded talfc-ta in a lovely shade of pink. Hand-painted china, brass work, carving, several beautifully-made and designed wool rugs, a lire screen with the Royal coat of arms done in wool tapestry, a collection of water colours, and a wonderfully made shawl of black Chantilly lacj over 100 years old. The competitive collections showed some excellent work, and all the exhibits were much admired and aroused great interest. The classes for hobbies, tapestry work, crochet on linen, embroidery and fancy work, knitting, thrift articles, and handmade Howers drew some very good entries, and altogether macle an excellent display. The judges were Miss Hewetson (hobbies and applied arts), Miss Laird, assisted by Mrs. Barkman (tapestry and embroidery work), Miss McDougal (knitting), Mrs. A. H. McLean (thrift articles). The awards were as follows:
