MEETING OF COUNCIL LAST NIGHT’S BUSINESS A meeting of the Wanganui City Council was held last evening, Mr W. J. Rogers, Mayor of Wanganui, presiding. Those present were Crs. J. Siddells, A. E. Halligan, J. J. Crowley, G. I. Jones, G. Bennett, G. H. Trott, T. Sperring, J. J. Scott and O. Hales. Notice of his acceptance of a seat on the advisory committee of the Sarjeant Gallery was received from Mr Vivian Smith, A.R.C.A. An application from the Discharged Prisoners’ Aid Society for a donation to its funds was not granted. The Mayor said that a donation of £5 should be made to the society, but was lost by five votes to four. Applications from the Plaza, Majestic and Duchess Theatres for permission to screen pictures on Christmas Day were granted on the usual conditions, on the motion of the Mayor. The New Zealand watersiders were granted the use of the Council Cham-

bers on November 17 for their annaul conference. The Wanganui Returned Soldiers’ Association was granted permission to hold Poppy Day on April 20, 1938, and was given permission to use the Opera House on Anzac Day. The Salvation Army was granted permission to hold a street collection day in October, 1938. The Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was granted the use of Cook’s Gardens for a sports meeting on the afternoon and evening of January 1, 1938. A letter was received from Mr W. J. Polson, M.P. for Stratford, consenting to the Durle Hill Reserve being named Polson Park.

A letter from Mr F. A. Godfrey regarding the condition of the footpath on the north side of Halswell Street, was received and referred, to the works committee. .A request from Mr W. Rountree for the tar-sealing of Portal Street to Hutchison Street was referred to the works committee. The Gonville School was granted the use of the Gonville Domain on week days from 3.30 p.m. to 5 p.m. for cricket, subject to arrangements beingmade with other organisations using the grounds. A similar decision was made when a request was made by the Castlecliff School for permission to play a cricket match on the Domain against the Tawhero School.
