OHAKUNE

FOOTBALL. SEVEN-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT. As far as football is concerned, the season was brought to a close on Saturday with the playing of a seven-a-side tournament for the charity cup. On Saturday several of the teams forfeited but those that played put on some excellent exhibitions. School Gaines. In the school games Raetihi B forfeited to Convent and Ohakune played Rangataua, the score being 3 all. In the toss Rangataua won and defeated Convent in the final by 3 points to nil. Third Grade. In the third grade games High School won from Raetihi B by default. Raetihi A won by default from Ohakune B. In the High SchoolOhakune A game High School won 8 to 3 and in the final High SchoolRaetihi after a most exciting game with some very fine passing bouts by High School they defeated Raetihi bv B—s. Junior Grade. In the junior games Raetihi were beaten in the final by 11 points to nil. Senior Grade. In the senior games Ohakune B played Rangataua and at the call of time there was no score and in the toss Rangataua won. Ohakune A defeated United by 13 points to 5 and Raetihi beat Rangataua in the semifinals 6 to 3. In the final Ohakune proved too fast for Raetihi and won by 6 to nil. OHAKUNE BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening. There were present His Worship the Mayor (Mr. L. W. Nation), Crs. W. C. Mahony, O. Spiller, W. J. Proffitt, J. Scott, L. Taylor and W. H. Walmsley. Apologies were received from Crs. Jordan and France. Prior to the commencement of business the Mayor duly swore in Cr. Walmsley, who was appointed in place of Cr. W. H. Boswell, resigned. He welcomed him to the council table and felt sure he would be an acquisition to the borough. Cr. Walmsley suitably replied.

Correspondence. From Gould and Callaghan forwarding memorandum of lease for property in Arawa Street to M. Sherrin duly completed. From local agent Automobile Association forwarding letter from Automobile Association, Wanganui, for council’s consideration in respect of road signs leading to Ohakune.—lt was resolved to communicate with the association pointing out that the signposts at the Tohunga Road deviation were not too clear and rather misleading and detrimental to Ohakune in that it only showed the way to Taihape, with no mention of Wellington, this only being indicated on the Wanganui route. From Commissioner of Crown Lands advising that owing to an error in his office the council has been overcharged for rent of easement over sections 2,3, 18, 20 block XXI and that the account is now in credit until March 31, 1944, —Received.

From Municipal Association of N.Z. advising that the next annual conference of the association will be held at New Plymouth on Tuesday, March 1, 1938 at 2.30 p.m. and asking that remits be submitted not later than November 25. —Received. From Public Works Department Highways Council advising that the Highways Board has decided that in approved cases only a highways subsidy of £1 for £1 will be granted in respect of both the construction and maintenance of footpaths on State and ordinary main highways and asking the council to forward separate estimates for construction and maintenance of those footpaths that the council is prepared to construct. —It was resolved that the clerk immediately prepare an estimate of the cost of putting in concrete curbing in the town areas that were not already done and also cost of top dressing footpaths along side of local highways.

From Transport Department forwarding summary of draft legislation in connection with taxis and town carriers being brought under the provisions of the Transport Licensing Act.—Received.

From Wanganui Public Library advising that 60 books have been supplied to Ohakune since June 1935, and that only a portion of these are being returned each month, with the consequences that there are 26 books outstanding and unaccounted' for.— Received. From State Fire Insurance Office offering to insure the electricity department’s truck for £lOO at a premium of £3 7s Id.—Resolved not to insure the truck. General. Cr. Proffitt brought up the question of dust from the crusher. When the crusher was working and a slight northerly wind blowing there was a continuous cloud of dust from this and it was affecting ratepayers residences in that area.

It was pointed out by the clerk that when wet weather was on they could not crusli owing to the screens clogging up with line sand and chips. The clerk was instructed to obtain a price for covering the crusher. It was resolved that the clerk obtain the price of half a dozen wire rubbish baskets for the business areas. The town clerk reported that the two trees from the Domain had been taken to Messrs. Bennet Punch’s mill and cut up, the timber now being stacked in the council's yard. This timber was to be used for the camp site building. The Mayor recommended that further trees should be taken, that were suitable, and cut up the timber to be stacked in council’s yard. There was timber necessary for the covering of the crusher as well as for many other small jobs. The clerk was instructed to see what arrangements could be made in this regard. Cr. Walmsley was elected to the Finance Committee. Crs. Jordan and Mahony were appointed to the Library Committe set up from the public meeting.

It was resolved that the electricity department put on a display of electrical goods in the old auction mart,

where previously displayed, and that Miss Delamar be deputed to attend to the window and cleaning once a week, also that a good supply of goods be maintained and effective lighting display be made. It was resolved that the Mutual Stores be thanked for their offer of displaying electrical goods on behalf of the borough and allowing the council the free window space. It was also recomended that the clerk endeavour to make arrangements for a similar display at the Junction if possible. (Country Continued on Page 1:1)
