HOMER TUNNEL WORK
CONTRACT BEING LET. [ Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Oct. 18. The 1 -tting of a contract by the Government for labour for driving the bottom heading tunnel through the Homer saddle as a preliminary to the major undertaking, was announced by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. R. Semple, to-day. The work ceased temporarily following the fatal avalanches a few months ago, but will 'probably commence next month. Further precautions will be taken to protect the workmen from the danger of avalanches by extending the concrete lining of the tunnel some distance beyond the eastern portal. The length of the tunnel when completed will be 4000 feet, the greater part of which will be solid rock.
