LEPERS REVOLT
EFFORT TO ESCAPE GENDARMES RESTORE ORDER. BUCHAREST, Oct. 17. Brandishing knives and sharp instruments stolen from a surgical ward, 70 lepers attempted a mass escape from the infectious diseases hospital at Tichilestu, a desolate spot in the mosquito-infested marshes of the Danube delta. The terror-stricken nurses and doctors were driven off by the lepers, who attempted to set fire to the hospital. The arrival of detachments of gendarmes and lorries prevented disaster. They surrounded the leprosarium and after firing several volleys over their heads, the lepers threw down their weapons and fell on their knees begging forgiveness. Several were slightly wounded. The ringleader escaped.
