ADDIS ABABA REVOLT

Heavy Toll of Italian Officers FAILURE OF NATIVE ARMY PLAN (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) Received Oct. 18, 10.30 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 18. The Daily Telegraph's Cairo correspondent states that an Italian who returned from Abyssinia asserts that the recent revolt which occurred at Addis Ababa caused far heavier Italian casualties than was reported. The Italians imagined that the main resistance had ended and in accordance with the furtherance of their wish to raise a large native army, they armed thousands of Abyssinians with modern rifles and machine-guns under Italian officers. The recruits were at first docile and apparently pleased to become Italian soldiers but meanwhile they were preparing the rising. At a prearranged signal they turned on their officers, killing all, and attempted to ensure a general rebellion. All available Italian troops and Askaris were rushed to Addis Ababa and quelled the revolt.
