HITHER AND THITHER

Card Afternoon. To assist the funds of the Wanganui East Croquet Club, Mesdames , Redpath ana Donald arranged a card party, which was held at the latter s • home one afternoon last week. Seven • tables were occupied in play. The bridge prize was won by Mrs A. E I Halligan and the winners of ’‘soo” I were Mis Lower and Miss Ruscoc.

St. John’s Bon ling Club. Feminine visitors to the opening of St. John’s Bowling Club on Saturday, numbered well over a hundred, and with a similar number of bowlers on the greens, the grounds presented a bright and animated scene. A charming little speech, conveying good wishes for the season, was made by the presidents wife, Mrs Lewis Bassett, when she played the first bowl. The ladies who were responsible for the tea arrangements, received praise from the president, who gave a special word of thanks to Mrs F. Cunningham lor her valuable and much appreciated help in past years. Mrs Cunningham has been a life member for 20 years. The bouquets presented to Mrs Bassett and Mrs Cunningham were composed of tulips and ranunculus with streamers of green and gold, the club colours. These shades were used for the decorations of the tea tables, the flowers including some loeviy Iceland poppies in gold shades. The bountiful afternoon tea provided by the ladies was one of the enjoyable features of the function.

Airport Party. A very jolly party was held at the airport last Saturday evening, when quite a number of club members and their friends motored out to the clubhouse to spend a social evening. A bright log lire lent an inviting and cheerful air to the atmosphere, and popular music, supplied by Messrs Gifford and Roydhouse, was much enjoyed by the dancers. A dainty supper of savouries and sweets was served buffet style.

During the evening opportunity was taken by Mr K. Congrieve, on behalf of fellow members, to extend a very hearty welcome to the new club instructor, Mr Tancred, and Mrs Tancred.
