WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

KAITOKE MEETING The usual meeting of the Kaitoke Institute was held in the hall on October 7, Mrs. Owles presiding over a good attendance. The members were asked to stand in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mrs. Garner. Members were reminded of the federation meeting being held at Westmere this week, and delegates appointed to attend and instructed how to vote. Mrs. Brine, voluntary organiser, spoke on the rules and aims of the institute ,the members taking a keen interest in her address and showing their appreciation with a hearty round of applause. She also showed j two beautiful handbags she had made out of felt hats and was asked to demonstrate these at the next meeting, which she kindly consented to do.

The combined grand concert arranged for the 21st has been postponed until the 28th, when it is hoped to have a packed house. A splendid programme has been arranged. Keen interest was taken in the wool rug demonstration by Mrs. Burston and her rug much admired, as also was the floral demonstration by Mrs. Shanks, whose nimble fingers quickly changed a bunch of flowers into a lovely wired hand bouquet, which was afterwards sent to a sick member. The results of the competitions were:—Points: Cream puffs, Mrs. Hogg 1. Garden circle: Six ranunculus, Mrs. Scott 1, Mrs. Bradshaw 2, Mrs. Moran 3. Floral trophy: Saucer lady, Mrs. Burston 1, Mrs. Bonner 2, Mrs. Owles 3. The next meeting will be International Day.
