WATER SUPPLY SCHEME
SOUTH CANTERBURY AREA [ Per Tresa Association. J WELLINGTON, Oct. 18. Details of the South Canterbury Downs water supply scheme, estimated to cost £270,000 and serving 150,000 acres, were given by the Hon. R. Semple to-day. The area affected is bounded by the Kakahu and Otaio Rivers and high hills in the Mackenzie and Levels counties, supplying water for land up to 900 feet. The area served includes several small centres of population, such as Cave, Gleniti, Rareora, and Pleasant Point The intake on the Tangawai River is six miles above the Albury. The main pipeline runs to below Cave, where a branch runs northward to the Geraldine County main line, continuing 1 to near the Claremont network. Three-quarter and half-inch pipes will carry the water to eacli 100 acres, and every occupied farm dwelling will also be supplied. The total length of piping will be about 700 miles. Several reset ,-oirs will be provided to ensure a continuity of supply. The average cost p acre will be about fl 15s.
