RUGBY LEAGUE TEST

TERRIFIC STRUGGLE ENGLAND DEFEATS AUSTRALIA Received Oct. 17, 7.5 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 16. England won the first Rugby League Test at Leeds against Australia by 5 to 4. Australia was leading at half-time by 4 to 2. The crowd was estimated at 40,000 and the takings approximately £3982. The match was a terrific struggle, no quarter being given by either side. The Australians played against the wind in the second half. The “destroying angel” was Emlyn Jenkins, who repeated history by cutting diagonally toward the Australian corner. With the defence beaten he dived over, out was too far out fur the goal to be kicked. Ho»vever, it was sufficient to give England victory as there was no other score. Australia’s four points came from two goals kicked by Beaton, while Martin Hodgson kicked a goal tor Englam. There were great Australian movements in which Beaton, McKinnon and Reardon figured, but the chances were lost, either through dropped cr forward passes. The English forwar.is crowded the Australian inside backs, watching Norman particularly. Belshaw and Ward had a kicking duel which ended in Ward dasning for the right wing to set his backs going, but the dash was foiled by England's deadly defence.
