DRAPER ATTACKED

ASSAULTED BY TWO MEN CASH TILLS RIFLED INVERCARGILL INCIDENT. [ Per Press Association. ) INVERCARGILL, Oct. 15. Attacked by two men when walking from the side door of his draper’s shop in Elies Road South to-night, Thomas William Richards, an elderly man, was knocked into a semi-con-scious condition and his hands were tied behind his back. The intruders then rifled two tills in the shop and escaped with a small sum of money. They also have the key of the safe, and it was not known to-night whether anything had been taken from it.

Mr. Richards was discovered by his wife lying in the shop at 9.30 p.m., about 20 minutes after the assault took place. He is suffering from bruises on the mouth and the wrists, where they had been tied, and from shock, but his condition is not serious.

Mr. Richards did not see the men who attacked him. His wife, who was in the house, which is separated from the shop by a right-of-way, heard someone running away and a few minutes later she was attracted to the shop by a peculiar noise. On going to investigate she found her husband, who was recovering consciousness.
