HARRIERS

BULLS-TO-MARTON RACE HANDICAPS DECLARED The final race of the Marton Harrier Club will be held to-day when some 20 runners will compete in the annual Bulls-to-Marton road race. The course is as follows: From the Bulls Post Office to Curl’s Bridge, along the Wellington Road to the nishing point at the Marton Post Office.

Marton competitors will assemble at the White Hart Hotel at 1.45 p.m., and will be conveyed by car to Bulls. The race will commence at 2.30 p.m. At the conclusion of the event all competitors wil be entertained to afternoon tea in the Druids’ Hall. Following are the handicaps:— F. Hill (M), scr.; W. Edge (M), 1.10 min.; L. Smith (M), 1.30; M. Griffin (M), 1.55; G. Bromiley (M), I. D. Smith (M), 2.10; A. Penberthy (W), 3.40; J. Carr (W), 4.45; G. Hallam (W), 5.15; R. Gilbertson (W), 6.45; T. Brooks (W), 7min.; W. Pilet (M), 7.15; A. Clark (W), 7.30; E. Hegglun (M), 7.30; H. Walker (W), 8 min.; J. Tayior (M), 8.45, G. Harrison (W), 9.50; R. Corps (W), 10.30; H. Kimpton (M), 10.30; R. Jones (M), 10.30; Comment. The handicapper has made a close study of the form of various competitors and has done his work well. The most likely starter appears to be J. Taylor, off Bmin. 45sec. He went well in. the Wangaehu road race recently, and with the start he has today should be well to the fore. The only thing that may be to his disadvantage is the distance* of the race. He seems to be best over six miles. Of the two Marton men on the limit (lOmin. 30sec.) little is known, but it is worthy of note that the limit is shorter this year than is generally the case.

Of the Wanganui runners Hallam and Brooks appear to have an equal chance of victory. The latter has proved himself a solid performer on the road, and if he’ can produce form consistent with that of earlier in the season he has a good chance. G. Harrison has been unfortunate in not securing a victory this season, and off his mark (9min. 50sec.) he needs only to sot a steady pace to be well up. For time honours, F. Hill, in the absence of C. Weller, appears to be a certainty, but it is a long race and therefore hard to predict if any one man will see it out. When the Wangaehu road race was run a few weeks ago Hill was at the top of his form and broke the record for the course by a fair margin. Edge was not going too well and was well back for time, but to-day the tables may be turned. Members of the Wanganui Harrier Club not making the trip tq Marton to-day will participate in a run from the Intermediate School at 2.30 p.m.
