CRICKET

WANGANUI ASSOCIATION OPENING DATES FIXED NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Umpire.”) The season opening dates for Wanganui cricket have been fixed as follows: —Junior, October 23; senior, October 30. The match and practice wickets on Cook’s Gardens are being specially prepared and top-dressed and should be in particularly good condition for the opening day. The following teams have been nominated for the senior grade:— United, Technical Old Boys, Technical School, Wanganui, Collegiate, and Marist.

Enthusiasm is running high as the opening day approaches, pointing to a most enthusiastic and successful year. There are quite a few representative players from other centres playing here this season and enthusiasts should see some sparkling cricket. An innovation in Wanganui senior cricket this season, will be the use of the full sized stumps as used in the representative games. Clubs are reminded to have their sets by October 30. The juniors are extremely keen and as matting is used on Victoria Park, their season opens on the 23rd., a week prior to the senior opening. The wickets and outfield are being prepared on the park, and should be in good nick by opening day. An extra team from College and one from the Boys Cricket Association is promised, making in all 10 teams, so there will be plenty of cricket for the juniors this season. The first round will be published next Tuesday. Umpires for the various grades are a necessity, long wanted in Wanganui cricket. Surely there are plenty of retired players in this city, who still are keen on willow weilding and who would assist this great old game, by forming an Umpires Association, or who would be willing to umpire each Saturday. ' The Wanganui Association would gladly receive jiames of any gentlemen who would be willing to do this work. Roll up old timers and help the game and the young players!
