MIGRATION CONFERENCE
COMMITTEE SET UP PLAN BEING PREPARED. LONDON, Oct. 13. The Migration Conference appointed a permanent committee, including Earl Mansfield, Lord Bledisloe, Brigadier-General Nation, members of the House of Commons, Sir P. J. Hannon (Con.), and Mr. C. G. Ammon (Lab.). A plan will be drawn up in collaboration with migration organisations in Britain and the Dominions for submission to the British Government.
The chairman of the conference said that it was intended firstly to attempt to form a federation of British voluntary migration bodies to avoid an overlapping of activities. Brigadier Culshaw, of the Salvation Army, said that General Booth last year authorised an Empire-wide survey by experts with a view to ascertaining the chances of resuming migration. It discovered, without exception, that the Dominions were most desirous of resumption. On the contrary, the hesitation and apathy in Britain was proved conclusively to exist after visits to 30,000 houses.
