JAPANESE IN CHINA SHELL SPLINTERS HIT U.S.A. FLAGSHIP (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) Received Oct. 15, 12.26 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 14. A message from Shanghai reports that Japanese shell splinters struck the United States flagship Augusta this morning, injuring an American sailor. The Japanese authorities apologised. The Daily Telegraph’s Shanghai correspondent says the objectives of the Japanese Army in China are now declared to be complete occupation of ali territory north of the Yellow River, occupation of Hainan Island, and a decisive Shanghai victory. They intend to achieve all three before the end of the year. The Emperor is reported to be concerned over “unfavourable” developments in Japan’s foreign relations. JAPANESE FRUSTRATED LANDING PARTY REPULSED WITH MACHINE-GUNS. CHINESE CONSUL’S REPORT. [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, Oct. 14. The Chinese Consul has received the following cablegram from Nanking:— “Several Japanese attempts to land more troops north-west of Liuho were frustrated. Twenty Japanese warships and seventeen transports arrived off the coast and bombarded the Chinese positions throught the night before infantry attempted to land. Chinese machine-gunners caught the Japanese wading knee-deep in the water and played havoc with them.
“Fighting south of Wentsaopang was extremely severe last night and this morning, the Japanese throwing all their available forces against the Chinese line astride the LiuhangDazang highway. At an early stage the Japanese made slight headway, but Chinese troops launched a general counter-attack and drove the Japanese back *o their original line.”
