SCHUMANN’S “BANNED ” CONCERTO
An outstanding musical event in 1 London this autumn will be the first English performance of Schumann’s violin concerto. It will take place at the opening of the 1937-38 scries of BBC symphony concerts, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult, anti Jelly d’Aranyi will be the violinist. The manuscript of this concerto was given to Joseph Joachim by the composer shortly before his death, ar..l for the last 30 years has been in th? Prussian State Library in Berlin. It has never been performed and until recently very few people knew of its existence. When the manuscript was deposited in the library, instructions were given that it should not be published until a hundred years after Schumann’s death, but the ban ha?! now been lifted. The concerto was written in 1853 and the composer died three years , later.
