TAIHAPE

THE MAJESTIC “ROSE MARIE” Rich in music, singing and scenic beauty, the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film version of the popular operetta, “Rose Marie,” opens a four-day season to-night at the Majestic Theatre. Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, who take the leading roles, are as delightful as they were in the film of Victor Herbert’s “Naughty Marietta," one of the most popular musical pictures ever screened. Wanganui audiences would have been well pleased to hear them sinning merely the original store, which includes "The Indian Love Call,” “Rose Marie, I Love You,” “Song of the Mounties” and several other items. But the pic- I ture also presents selections from the ; operas “Romeo and Juliet” and “La Tosca.” The result is a musical fcasi, set against magnificent backgrounds of mountain trails, shimmering lakes and cloud-flecked skies. Miss MacDonald’s earlier scenes display her as a temperamental prima donna. Her artificial manners and her sudden reversions from public amiability to private storms of rage demand an acute sense of comedy in which she is never lacking. Besides excerpts from “Romeo and JuHet,” she sings a gay number called "Pardon Me, Madam." GOLF NOTES MORTLAND’S KING COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP J. P. Mortland, of Taihape, won the King Country golf championship held at Taumarunui on the King’s Birthday holiday. Two rounds of 18 holes were played and Mortland finished at the head of a very big field with a score of 75—80—155. Fog and frost made playing conditions very difficult but nevertheless Mortland reeled off eigl i 4’s and a three to complete the first nine holes in 35—a performance that speaks for itself. He came home in 40 to card a well deserved 75. His long game was just as good in the afternoon as it had been in the morning, but he dropped a number of strokes on the greens, and had to be content with an 80. Conditions in the afternoon were totally different from those experienced in the morning before the frost thawed. Mortland was hitting his shots very straight and only once was he off the fairway during the 36 holes. His victory this year marks the third occasion on which he has carried off the title. J. C. Belk won last year, but had to be satisfied with fourth place this year with a score of 85—74—159. A. Sandel (Taumarunui) was second with. 81—75—156, one stroke more than Mortland. G. Roberts (Taihape) handed in a card of 84—74—158. Several other Taihape players competed but finished amongst the “also starteds.” Taihape golfers will unite in congratulating the local champion on his meritorious performance at 'Taumarunui on Wednesday. .
