RAETIHI

RUGBY FOOTBALL RAETIHI v. UNITED In a fine game, full of incident and marked by rapidly fluctuating fortunes, United beat Raetihi by 12 points to 9 at Raetihi on Saturday last. The difference in points indicates the respective merits of the teams since, although the forwards broke evenly, with the honours for individual loose play going to Raetihi. the United backs delighted the spectators with good handling and kicking and with crisp, snappy passing. Each side scored only one try, the other points coming from forward infringements by both packs. United were penalised three minutes from the commencement and McNichol raised the flags for Raetihi s first three points. Fired by this, United came away to Raetihi’s 25 but were not decisive enough to cross the line. Raetihi were not, however, allowed to keep their lead for a penalty kick to United saw Clark make no mistake. Good individual play by Trusttum, Lynch and Henry brought clanger to the United line, but their backs replied with spirited sallies which, but for deadly tackling, would have culminated in scoring. Halftime came with United in Raetihi’s 25. Refreshed by the interval and with the wind behind them, Raetihi’s forwards swept down to United’s 25. Rickards was getting possession in the scrums but the Raetihi backs lacked the necessary penetrative ability to finish off. From a forward melee near the sideline a wild pass came to Solomon who sent Kayser in. Several more forwards and backs handled, Rickards finally crossing the line. McNichol failed to convert. Yc*t another scrum infringement saw United assume the lead again, Clark putting over a great kick. Play was now fast willing, both packs of forwards playing with verve. The two sets of backs were being sent away but the tackling and backing of both sides were excellent. Obstruction in ’he line out cost Jnitea three points, McNichol kicking a beautiful goal from the sideline. Trusttum was nearly over a few moments later but was recalled, Raetihi being conceded a penalty kick which proved fruitless. From a long throw-in in Raetihi’s 25, United backs secured, and a good passing rush saw H. Haitana go over for the deciding try. A penalty raised Raetihi’s hopes of equalising but McNichol failed to score. Play was now mostly in United territory, although they made occasional sorties to the Raetihi line. United nearly widened the margin when H. Haitana broke, but McNichol, with a spectacular burst of speed, overhauled him. United were strenuously pressing when the final whistle blew.

In Raetihi’s greatly improved pack of forwards, Trusttum and Henry were good leaders while Solomon was the best of the backs. For United Murphy and Lind led the forwards while Bell and H. Haitana were the best of a good set of backs. Mr F. McGreevey wielded the whistle. The results of the other Ruapehu sub-Union football matches played on Saturday last were as under:— Senior.—Ohakune 6, Rangataua 6. Junior.—Karioi 11, United 0; Ohakune 31, Raetihi 3; Rangataua, a bye Thirds.—Otakune 16, Raetihi 0. High School a bye. PERSONAL Miss Marjorie List. Mr. C. BrentonRule and Mr. H.
