BIG AIRLINER

UNION AIRWAYS ’PLANE KORORO VISITS CITY PRACTICE LANDINGS MADE Union Airways de Halilland airliner “Karoro," one of the three machines used on the trunk service between Palmerston North and Dunedin, visited the Wanganui Airport yesterday afternoon. The machine was flown from Palmerston North by Flight-Lieutenant Blyth, chief pilot of Union Airways, with Mr. Murdoch McLeod as copilot, and landed at the Wanganui Airport at 2 p.m. Two passengers ' were carried on the trip and returned with the ’plane later in the afternoon. During the afternoon Mr. McLeod, who is a member of the pifot staff of Union Airways, carried out practice landings with Flight-Lieutenant Blyth and later on his own. The machine created considerable interest as it flew over the town and shortly after its arrival a number of people motored out to the aerodrome. The machine left Wanganui on the return journey at 4.30 p.m. and would land at Milson about 18 or 19 minutes later. Union Airways have frequently used the Wanganui Airport for landing practices because of its proximity to Palmerston North and the long runways available. Yesterday the giant airliner required only a portion of the available runways for landing and taking off and demonstrated that the Wanganui Airport is sufficiently large to accommodate the largest commercial machines now in use in the Dominion and with ease.
