AGROUND ON REEF

THE FIONA AT SUVA SUVA, Nov. 24. The Fiona is aground fore and aft, but is not making water. The discharg.ng of 1940 tons of molasses and 50 tons of general cargo is expected to raise her two feet, and it is hoped to refloat her at high tide at 2.24 p.m. The Fiona struck at dead low water inside the eastern reef of the passage, approximately 700 yards from the normal middle of the passage course at a point where the water shoals rapidly from six fathoms to one and a-half. Part of the molasses cargo has been jettisoned in the hope of refloating the vessel on this afternoon’s tide. The tidal rise is four and a-half feet. The master is Captain V. G. Parker.

MOVED BY TUGS BUT STILL HARD AND FAST Received Nov. 24, 10.50 p.m. SUVA, Nov. 24. With the aid of three of the sugar company’s tugs, the Fiona started to move at 12.35 p.m., and it was thought that she was coming off, but although she moved some distance she was still hard and fast on the reef when the tide commenced falling.
