WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

TTTRANGARERE ) Mrs. Alurdoch presided over a fair at- ■ tendance at the Afay meeting of the Turangarere Women’s Institute. After extending a very hearty welcome to visitors and members the following business was attended to. It was decided that Airs. Murdoch be sent as delegate to the Dominion Conference to be held in Dunedin. Final arrangements were made for the birthday meeting on June .19 and the birthday dance to be held at Hihitahi on June 20. It was agreed to have a trading table at our usual monthly meetings, Mrs. Newton to be in charge. A donation was made to the school committee who kindly grant us the use of the hall free of charge for our meetings, etc. Two members consented to have their names on the demonstrators ’ panel. The competition. “The Best Laundered Tray Cloth,” was won by Airs. Redman, Mrs. Brophy being second. The guessing competition was won by Miss Peggy Egan. During the afternoon Airs. Perry, in a very capable manner, demonstrated th© making of cot covers, and Mrg. Speedy, of Rangawaea, showed us how brushes could be made from rope. Both ladies were accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. After afternoon tea had been served very nicely by the hostesses, Afesdames Millan and Newton and Miss Thora Millan, the singing of the National

Anthem brought a very enjoyable meeting to a close. FORDELL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Fordell Women’s Institute was held last Tuesday, Airs. Bruce presiding over a good [attendance of members and visitors. Two new members were welcomed— Airs. J. Glasgow and Aliss Avery. It was decided to semi a delegate to the Dunedin Conference, Airs. Dale being chosen to represent Fordell. Aliss N. Christie read a very interesting report, of the recent council meeting held in Wanganui. During the afternoon Aliss Currie gave a talk on biographies and autobiographies in connection with the lives of Pepys, Wilson and others, and Miss J. Harman, Wanganui, sang two delightful songs, “Ships of Arcady ’ ’ and ‘‘Blackbird Singing.” Airs. Dale moved a vote of thanks to Aliss Currie for her interesting 1 aJk and hoped she would give another lecture very soon. The competitions were as follows: — Baby's knitted pilihers (gift to charity), Aliss A. Henderson 1, Aliss R. Flyger 2, Aliss O. Barnes 3; ladies’ spray, Miss Al. Tilley 1. Afiss R. Henderson 2, Afiss N. Christie 3. Guessing old photographs of members was won by Miss ID. AlcGovern. Th© meeting then closed with lhe (National Anthem. The hostesses for next month are Mesdames Howie, J. Carroil, Power and Misses I. Howie and E. Wilkinson. The competitions for next meeting will be; (1) Best Limerick about institute members. (2) Flower, one bloom (any variety). Special competition for those who have never entered before, three plain scones. There will also be a clothes drive. UPPER WAITOTARA A mo ; t enjoyable social evening was held in the hall last Saturday evening, May 23, to celebrate the second birthday of the Upper Waitotara Women’s Institute. The music was kindly supplied by Afesdames F. AL Ross, J. Peat, and Air Hawkins. Air Turner capably carried out the duties of mantel of cere-

monies. During th© evening a competition was held, Aliss N. Aden winning th© ladies’ prize and Air F. Chesswaa the men’s prize. After a dainty supper supplied by the members, the president, Airs G« Jarnos, made a few appropriate and thanked all who had helped to make tho evening a success. She then presented Airs F. AL Ross with a bou quet in appreciation of her services as p-anist throughout th© year, and Miss N. Allen with the points prize for the past year, Mrs Tomlinson being second. Airs F. AL Ross was winner of tho potato competition (2Slbs.) The lovely birthday cake was made and iced by Afrs G. James, the youngest member, Aliss Joyce Koberstein, lighting the two candles, und the oldest member, Afrs F. Al. Rcss, Ucwing them out. Dancing was then resumed until midnight, when the singing of the National Anthem brought a very happy a»nd successful evening to a close. TURAKINA When me Turakina Women's Institute met this month, Mrs. Knox presided over a good attendance of members and one new member was wel corned. Correspondence was receive! and discussed, also an invitalion from the Marton Women’s Institute Io attend the birthday party next Tuesday. It was decided to send a delegate to the Dominion Federation meeting lo be held in Dunedin in July, also lo hold a dance and card evening this week. Mrs. Fowler gave a demonstration on “Glove making,” for which she was thanked. On seeing several pairs of both men's and women’s gloves made by Airs. Fowler, the members have decided to form a circle to do this work, with the promised help of the demonstrator. Th© competition. “Old Photo graphs,” brought to light many old and quaint specimens of the photographer’s art. The competition for rakes was won by Mrs. Flyger, with Airs. Keohancs scrond and ALsByers third. Afternoon tea was served.
