EAST COAST OILFIELDS
EARLY INVESTIGATION GOVERNMENT INTENTIONS [ Per Press Association. J WELLINGTON, May 27. The possibility of the early and intensive investigation by experts of oilfields on the East Coast, near Gisborne, was mentioned in an interview to-day by the Minister of Mines, the Hon. p. C. Webb. Considerable geological and developmental work has already been carried on in the area but, according to Mr. Webb, the investigations which will probably be commenced within a few months will be more exhaustive than any previously undertaken on any oilfields in the Dominion. It appealed that prospects for finding oil in payable quantities were distinctly favourable. If such a result was obtained it would be of the utmost importance tn New Zealand as a whole.
