I AUCKLAND, May 7. i The re trial of Erie Mareo for the i alleged murder of his wife, Thelma 1 Mareo, will open at Auckland ou June I 1. Mareo. who is a£ present an inmate of Mount Eden Prison, was sentenced to death by Mr. Justice Fair at the Auckland criminal sessions on February 28. A re trial was ordered following an appeal to the Executive Counc’J presiued over by the Governor-Gen- j eral. j Al the first trial the Crown case i was handle*! by Mr. A. H. Johnstone, K.C.. and Mr. V. N. Hubble, for the reason that the Crown Prosecutor at Auckland, Mr. V. R. Meredith, was on his way back io New Zealand after managing the All Blacks in Great Britain. Now that he has taken up his duties as Crown Prosecutor again Crown evidence will be Jed by him. Mareo. at the re-trial, will again be defended by Mrs. H. F. O'Leary. K.C., of Wellington, and Mr. Trevor Henry and Mr. K. C. A ekins. Fresh evidence is to rome from Australia. It is not yet known how many Australian witnesses will be brought to i Auckland. Their evidence will not be ! taken on commission as i< usual in j civil cases. CHARGE AGAINST GUNN HEARING OF THE DEFENCE TRIAL NEARS ITS END ( Per Press Association. ) DUNEDIN. May 7. The trial of Hugh Urquhart Neil Gunn, on a charge of murdering William Beatty, at Waitepka, on February 22. was continued in the Supreme Court. The whole day was devoted to evidence and cross-examination of witnesses fur the defence. Accused himself was cross-examined by F. B. Adams i Crown Prosecutor) for more than an hour and a-half, and was subsequently re-examined at length by Mr C. J. L. White, for the defence.
