FOR SAMOA
POLITICAL MISSION MINISTER AND MEMBER MR. SAVAGE’S STATEMENT WELLINGTON, May 5. 'l’he decision of the Government to send io Samoa one Cabinet Minister and one other member of the Government party was announced yesterday at Wellington, by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, following .a meeting of Cabinet. Mr. Savage said i.hat the two representatives of the Government would leave for Apia at the earliest opportunity after urgent Parliamentary business had been disposed of. and the object of their mission would be to investigate the affairs of the Samoan people and to advise the Government of future lines of action. “I have already said that we want the Samoans to feel that they are receiving justice,” Mr. Savage said. “A message of goodwill has been sent to them, and I have no doubt that we will receive their co-opera-tion. 1 attach no undue significance to the reports that members of the Mau have been parading in Apia. After all. trades unions and other organisations frequently hold parades in New Zealand, and the most recent activities of the Mau may be in celebration of the changed atmosphere. “We have received advice of the latest Mau activities from the Act-ing-Administrator, Mr. A. C. Turnbull, but wo do not see that there is any occas : on for action on the part of the Gvernment. ’ ’ The Prime Minister added that the personnel of the Government mission to Samoa had not yet been decided. The present indications were that he , personally would be unable to make the trip/ Even aftter the completion of the Government’s programme of urgent legislation, thare would remain a considerable volume of work for attention during the proposed winter recess. It was definite that Mr. O. F. Nelson would bo permitted to return to Samoa within the time limit stipulated by the Government.
