OPTIMISTS’ CLUB

NEW YEAR COMMENCED IDEALS OF ROTARY ADDRESS BY MR. O. HOLST. The AVanganui Optimists’ Club commenced its weekly dinners last evening after being in recess for the summer month. The new president, Air. David T. Allen*, presided over an attendance of 30 optimists. The speaker was Mr. O. Holst, whosj subject was “The Ideals of Rotary.” Air. Holst said that the order of service of Rotary was: Firstly, in personal relations; secondly, in business : relations; and, thirdly, in community I relations. Rotary stood for the ad- ; vancement of international understand- ' ing, goodwill and peace through a 1 world-wide fellowship nf business and I professional men united in the ideal of j service. The Rotary movement had its beginning away back in 1905, and its I founder was Paul Harris, of Chicago. To-day the Rotary movement had a hold in 70 odd countries and had nearly 7000 separate clubs with a total membership of more than 160,000 Rotarians. Rotary, he said, stood to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy Enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: (1) The development of acquaintanceship as an opportunity for service; (2) high ethical standards in business and profesisons; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; i (3) the application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his personal, business and community life.
