RACING AT PAEROA

OHINEMURI JOCKEY CLUB PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY (Special to “Chronicle.”) AUCKLAND, March 13. The annual race meeting of tae Ohinemuri Jockey Club, opening tomorrow and concluding on St. Panick’s Day (Tuesday), is mure than usually interesting, lor it witnesses the first steeplechase contest in the north in eacn calendar year. These evemts prove an invaluable guide to the cross-coun-try events at Ellerslie at Easter. Fields for to-morrow’s opening are very goud indeed, and with the prospect of splendid going after rain earlier in the week the fixture should be must successful. Recent alterations to the race track have now made the L’acrua course a good one, with a straight of a furlong and a-haif. Betting at the fixture will be the win and place system. Practically the same horses have been contesting the many cup and handicap evemts on the provincial circuits, but with five of this class decided of late weeks, it is problematical if the question of \snat will win it. any easier to answer than it might have been at the beginning of the season. So it is witn the Ohinemuri Cup, the main rate tomorrow, run over eleven furlongs, lor most c-f the horses engaged have raced on the circuit iu the last few weeks. An. exception is Mazir, who was oft the scene after winning at Takapuna six weeks ago, and it is nut known if he iis quite right in himself to play a prominent part to-morrow, lit and well, he would be a very hard horse to beat, lor he is good and is nicely placed in the handicap; in any case, the very fact that he is accepted for should be sufficient to indicate his co-n--dition. In addition to Mazir, those with chances would appear to be Enge, Grand Talk, Prince Colossus, Valrent, Tahurangi and Mafeking. Lt is not such a etrong field after ail when one comes to analyse it, so one can only plump for the two best horses, Mazir and Enge. Made a bit more use of than he was at Te Aroha and Pukekohe, Enge, with an allowance reducing hi» weight to 8.11, would give the opposition something to do to catch him over the last half-mile. A first-class sprint field is engaged iu the Flying Handicap, and here early brilliancy will be a vital factor. Boughal, Namakia, Sinking Fund, Kilbvris, Puss Meth, Lucidus, and the Coronis-tSolomon bracket seem to fill the bill in this respect, while Wahine lleihi and Royal {Secret are a pair in improving form. Tin Lap aud Refresher may be the best oi the others. Once again faith must be pinned to Boughat on this turning track, but Royal Secret, Wahine Berni, Namakia and the bracket cannot be left out of calculations. Two very promicing hurdlers have been seen out recently, in Modern Maid and Huskie, and they may dispute the issue in the battens event, with Huskie, possessing more pace, getting the final vote. Gc-lden Sheila reads a fair prospect in the two-year-old event, and the consistent Light Comedy is given yet another good chance in the Netherton Hack, f’he Awaiti Maiden it a problem, with a big surprise likely. Tirch, who won so well at Te Aroha, reads very well in ’the final event, the hack sprint. There aie eight in the McGuire Steeplechase, with Gascille at the head of the list. He went well at I’ukekohe last Saturday over the sticks and as iic will be much improved by that outing he is going to take a lot of beating. Forest Glow is handily placed and as he has schooled well at Awapuni p.nd has come a long way he is a possibility. Usually the ground is very hard for the ’chasers at this time of the year, but to-morrow it should be perfect. It is reported from Te Rapa that Gay Streak and Wahine Keihi may not fulfil their first day’s engagements. Form horsen engaged to-morrow are the following:— 12.0: Karangahake Handicap.
