WELLINGTON RACES

AUTUMN AT TRENTHAM THOMPSON HANDICAP BEVIEW OF PROSPECTS (By “Kestrel’’) With an extra day’s racing through there being the Masterton Kacing club’s dates vacant, the Wellington Kacing Club’s autumn meeting, commencing to-day, will extend over three days, being continued on Monday and Tuesday. .Judging by the fields for today, the fixture should prove one of the most successful in recent years. The improved weather enjoyed during the past few days has had the effect <»f making the track conditions splendid. and as there was yesterday little threat of rain the racing should be conducted under excellent conditions. ’The totalisator will be operated under the win and-p!a< e system and barometer indicators will, as usual, be used. The meeting is likely to be attended by a large contingent of Wanganui followers of form in view of next week’s Manawatu autumn fixture. Recent winners in the opening event, ‘he Haere mai Highweight, include Blue Tiger, Summer Hill. Royal Papa, and Court Arma, may be prominent, and there are ethers who may appeal in Entheos. Taumau and Night lass. The favourites may be Summer Hill, Blue Tiger, and Court Arma. A change in the order of the programme has brought the Si. Leger Stakes into second place on the list. Four remain in the classic event, but the issue appears to be between Greek shepherd and Entail, the former winner of the Great Northern Derby, and Entail, winner of the Great Northern Guineas. Though the public verdict n.av be in favour of Greek Shepherd, Entail is sure to improve on his Rangitikei Cup second placing and krre*lit another classic event to his ownerbreeder. For horses that have not won a race worth more than £5O to the winner, the Trial Plate has a iarge field engaged. Begorrah and Sansfoy are recent winners. and Hunting Mars. First Chapter. Fortene. Impossible, Martial Lady, and Peter’s Pence appear to be likely can- » dates. With Martial Lady, ridden by R. Reed, this may be the favourite, with Begorrah and Impossible also well supported. The juveniles in the Pacific Handicap include a number of winners. Wild t’hase, Castos. Gay Chief. Laughing Lass. Wagner. Mandamus. Pelmet, Karl. Birthdav Party, and Imposture have rhe best form, and unless there is to be a decided surprise the winner should come from this section of he field. The Wild Chase-Top Notch bracket and Gustos should share favouritism, but Imposture should extend them, judging by her form on the tracks. The usual problem is presented in the Thompson Handicap, for the class horses in the top half of the handicap are opposed by some really good, lightlyweighted performers. Silver Ring would have to establish a weight-carrying re • ord, but be has only 21b. more than he carried when he won the Dunedin • up. Fracas and Queen of Song are Southerners who have won at Tientham. Spiral. Rereatu, Big Dook, Arctic King, After Money, Variant, Friesland, Passion Flower, and Sir Nigel must ail be given good chances, and even outside these there are a couple capable of springing a surprise. Lt is going to be a difficult race lor the public to sum up, but the indications are that they will declare for Silver Ring. Rereatu and Passion Flower. Over the seven furlongs of the Tinakori Handicap there are many performs s who are not far short of open company. Solaria. Grateful, Erua, Darecourt, Chief Ranger, Silver Jest, Pakanui. Rival Shot, Roaming and The sandwich Man appeal most, and three • hat may be well supported are Pakanui, Solaria, and Grateful. The piinters in the Railway Handicap are headed by Silver Streak, who promises to finish up favourite, but Knockfin. Rereatu, Invoice. Acceptable, Haut Monde. Bazaine. and Cranford w.J be strong contenders for premier honours. As there have been so many surprises i this event in the past. Rereatu may repeat his success of last year. Acceptable and Bazzine are another good pair. The mile race with which the day’s racing concludes is likelv to attract over a dozen contestants, among the divi-ion fnirlv certain to be weli backed being Riptide, Pukoko. Dungarvan. Onewhetu. Maine. Dehham. and Geitel. The favourite should bp Dungarvan. with Viikoko and Geitel next in reFolJnwing is the list of acceptors: — HAERE-MM HIGHWEIGHT. ON TRENTHAM TRACKS FINAL GALLOPING TRIALS Y ESTER DA Y’B OPER A LTON’S ! The final work at Trentham yesterday morning was done mainly by visiting horses, and it consisted generally ot sprinting tasks. Most of the horses are now on the scene, but among those who will not be coming are Bereft, Dark Rose, Wotan, and Supreme Court. The weather was dull at first, but it brightened later and the times became taster as the morning progressed. The galloping was again done on the outside oi the course proper, writes Rangatira” in the Evening Post, bummer Hill went the last half-mile of five furlongs in 52 3-ssec. Hunting Mars did a smart early half-mile in 49sec. Fracas, without being forced, took 49 3-ssec. Rival Shjt clocked 50sec. Variant was just in front of Roaming after running six furlongs in Imin. 17 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 50 2-5 see.. Variant particularly going well. Custos was a short head in front of Pelmet and finishing better after slipping over half a mile in 49sec. Wild Chase and Top Notch caiue down the straight half, the former running on j the better. Friesland left. Revival at the end of five furlongs, the last half-mile iu 50 sec. Friesland finished brilliantly when kicked up near the post. Invoice and Silver Jest ran half mile in 50 Lssec. Contract required 53sec., and Geitel 52see. Rereatu did the first five furlongs in Imin. 3sec., the last half-mile in 4b 4-ssec. It. is believed that he may prefer the sprint to-day to the Thompson. Greek .Shepherd aud Davolo went about a mile, the last halt in 53sec. Cranford went up the back in 52 3-5 sec. and came home the final half-mile in 54sec. Fortene sprinted down the straight. Night Spi and Consummation surprised by running half a mile in 49see. Wagner was a good half-length ahead of Martial Lady after dashing down the straight half-mile. Double Gift ran the distance on the course proper in 49 2-ssec. Queen of Song, after accompanying Double Gift to the half-mile, came round to the seven furlongs and ran home from there in Imin. 34 2-ssec., the last half-mile in 53sec. She is well, but is not a good track mare. Silver Streak went nearly five furlongs alone, doing the last half-mile comfortably in 50 3-ssec. Entheos and Clarion Call ran the last half-mile of over five furlongs in Msec. Entail’s Impressive Work. Entail finished on a length better than Spiral, with Rust, not forced out, four lengths away, after running six furlongs in Imin. IS l-ssec., the final half-mile in 51see. Entail looks in fine order, and on the way he finished yesterday he will be troublesome to Greek Shepherd at the end of the St. Legpr. Laughing Lass, showing brilliantl early speed, beat Gay Chief by three lengths over half a mile in 48 2-ssec. Gay Chief, who has already had eighteen starts, is obviously a very hardy

little colt, and it will be recalled that he did not shine in track trials before the January meeting, where he deadheated for first on the final day. Senior and Kotou separately did serviceable six furlongs. Birthday Party, a big filly, came down the straight half. Karl recorded the best half-mile figures in 48sec. Mandamus, who is a long-striding eolt, took 49sec. Haut Monde ran six furlongs in Imin. 17 2-ssec., the last half-mile in 51sec. F. W. Davis states that probably only two of his two-year-olds will run today, but he has not decided which two yet. Additional scratchings are Hunter’s Morn (2 p.m. Thursday), Ben Braggie (9 a.m. yesterday), and Bereft (9 a.m. ( yesterday). With Ben Braggie out, K. Reed will now be free to ride Martial Lady in the Trial Plat#.
