A YACHT RAMMED

The Wellington yacht Nanette, a 35* footer with an auxiliary engine, was rammed and sunk in Pelorus Sound at 1(> o’clock last night. With a party ocf 14 men on board the Nanette was proceeding under sail from St. Omer to Temahia where the. party proposed to attend a dame when the launch Wharatea, owned by Orchard Bros., of St. Omer, crashed into the Nanette’s side in the darkne.ss. All hands on the Nanette were below at the time, but there was no panic though the water immediately poured in through the gaping hole and one bv one they emerged through Hie cockpit, and stepped on board the launch, not one even getting his feid wet. The Nanette sank in a few minutes in 40 feet of water. The party proceeded on the launch to Temahia, and to-day ropes ha\e been got. round the sunken craft and an endeavour is being made to salvage her by means’ of punts, every hope being held that the method will be successful. At the time of the- ao ident all we-re below but two of the crew, who were sailing the vessel. 'They saw the oncoming launch at lhe last moment, but before they could give the alarm or do anything to averi the <rasli the launch had stove a big hole in the yacht amidships.
