An Ocean Race? Two coaital vessel?, both bound i’er Wellington, cleared Wanganui practically together yesterday morning. The s.s. llolmdale, which arrived on .•Sunday, completed discharge of her southern cargo shortly before 11.30 a.m. and left the Town W’harf about J 2 minutes ahead of the motor-ship Gale, speculation was rife on the waterfront as to which vessel would reach Wellington first, though there no suggestion of the respective masters having challenged each other to a race. A few years age-, howeve.under similar circumstances, a racf would have most certainly been held. In thoce days rivalry between the different ships, particularly sailing vessels, was very keen, and each skipper would do his utmost to show the other a clean pair of heels. Even within comparatively recent years coastal eteamers frequently raced each other from port to port. At one time the Holmdale was one of the fastest boats trading regularly into W'anganui and carried the courage of a greyhound on her foremast.
Exhibition of Art. The annual exhioition cf the Wanganui Arts and Crafte Society, which was opened early in December at the Sarjeant Gallery, will be concluded on January 16. The exhibition Jias been visited by many people during that time, including a large number of visitors from outside districts, who have expressed their appreciation of the display. Pohutukawas in Bloom. Pohutukawas, the New Zealand Christmas trees, are now in bloom in \arious parts or the city and with their brilliant red blooms present a pretty picture. The avenue of these trees in Carlton Avenue are bursting forth into bloom but the trees in Liverpool Street extension and at the Wanganui Collegiate School are almost in full bloom. A large pohutukawa tree at the entrance to the Girls’ -College is a masd of brilliant blooms and makes an imposing sight. Pohutukawas in the Auckland district usually bloom just before Christmas and are Jpuked on as heralds of the festive season. The Wanganui City Council has planted .1 number "of these trees at Castleclift Beach and when they reach maturity will add to the beauty of the beach during the holiday perioo?
