SEAMEN’S STRIKE

MEN’S DETERMINATION STOP WORK UNTIL TUESDAY PARALYSIS OF INTER-STATE SHIPPING Received Dec. 2, 12.30 a.m. k SYDNEY, Dec. 1. x Week-end developments seem to indicate that the seamen intend to pValyse inter state sea transport until a special stop-work meeting on Tuesday determines whether they will work under the terms and conditions of the new award. A total of 644 men are already involved. The Huddart Parker Company has been advised that the cr.i.v of the Zealandia, due to-mor-row from Hobart, has given 24 hours’ notice of an intention to leave the ship on arrival at Sydney. The Wanganella’s sailing hag been postponed. PASSENGERS BY STRATHNAVEB The Commonwealth Navigation Department will probably grant permit tion for the overseas liner Strathnavei to carry the Manoora’s inter-State passengers. This will involve a special dispense on under the Navigation Act, which disallows oversea liners to compete with inter-State passenger vessels. The Strathnaver sails for London this evening. It is understood that this arrangement has angered the seamen. The Union Company’s freighter Talune, which arrived from Newcastle on Friday and which was to have sailed for Hobart at midnight, is tied up, as members of the crew stated that they would not offer for re-en-gagement until they had consulted the union. The Newcastle branch of the Seamen’s Union has decided not to work under the new Federal award. The Sydney Morning Herald says it is now regarded as certain that the men will strike on every vessel arriving at Sydney over the week-end.
