MR. COTTERILL HONOURED

MEETING AT EASTOWN THREE RAILWAY MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT. A large meeting of Eastown Work- • shops’ employees was briefly addressed during the hinCh hour yesterday by Air J. B. Cotterill, the newly-elected ALP. ' for AVanganui. Air Cottcrill thanked his shopmates for the way they had supported him. It was a continuance of the confidence they had reposed in him several years ago when he was elected secretary of the A.S.R.S., a position he held until his retirement from the railway service to contest the AVanganui seat. The result of tne election in AVanganui yas unique, he said, inasmuch as Mr W. A. A’eitch.- who had represented the constituency for 24 years, came from the railway, and in 1911 had displayed a railwaytnan in Air J. Hogan. On AVednesday history repeated itself and another railwayman was elected to represent AVanganui. Although a family record could be claimed for Lyttelton by the AlcCombs family, the railwaymen of New Zealand could claim a family record for AVanganui. Air Cotterill said that from the well wishes and congratulatory messages he had received it was evident that the eyes of railwaymen throughout New Zealand were centred on AVanganui on election day. He would always carry with him pleasant memories of his association with the men at Eastown, and felt that the Labour Party would now be in the position to rectify some of the injustices suffered by civil servants in general. The following resolution was carried unanimously: (1) “That this large and representative meeting of Eastown AVorkshop employees congratulates Air Cotterill upon his election to Parliament and expresses the opinion that the citizens of AA’anganui have made a wise choice, and that Air Cotterill will fill the position with honour to himself and the T.abour Party; (2) congratulates Air Al. J. Savage, MT., the Leader of the Labour Party, on the wonderful vote of confidence accorded him and his party by the people of the Dominion and confidently believes that under his able leadership the Dominion will soon be restored to prosperity.*’ Musical honours were accorded Air Cotterill and the meeting concluded with cheers for the candidate and his wife. ____________
