Air. G. E. Shute, who has been an inmate of the Wanganui Hospital, has returned to his home in No. 3 Line, Wanganui East. Mr J. W. AVhelan, of Palmerston North, orchard inspector for the Department of Agrivulture, was a visitor to AVanganui yesterday. The Rev. A. Porter, Presbyterian missionary at Alatawhero, w r ho has been recuperating in Wanganui, is preaching at Alaxwcll and AVestmere on Sunday. The Rev. A. Porter is leaving on a visit to Alaticre on Alonday. Mr. Edmund S. Paul, chairman of directors of the Australian 'Provincial Assurance Association, Limited, arrived from England yesterday by the Alonterey and will spend a few days in the (Dominion liefore proceeding to Australia. Former residents of AVanganui met in London by Air. and Airs. John Ashwell, of St. John’s Hill, during their recent visit to England, were Arthur Porritt, Dr. AlcNaughton Christie, Mr. C. J. Wray, and Aliss Batten, of the AVanganui Hospital staff, who is on leave in England. Dr. ,T. C. Beaglehole has Been ap ' pointed lecturer and assistant, Professor of History at A'ictoria University College, AVellington, out of 27 applicants, several of whom were from England. .He has been connected with the Workers’ Educational Association and is the author of several works on Historical and other subjects. ■Colonel. J. L. Sleeman, C.M.G., C.8.E., A1.V.0., is expected to arrive in New Zealand early in January. He is now Chief Commissioner of St. John Ambulance Brigades Overseas, and is to combine pleasure with business, and will take occasions to visit and inspect the various brigades throughout the Dominion so far as .time will permit. Colonel Slceman was wounded early in the Great War, and in 1916 was loaned to New Zealand by the British Government as director of military training, and remained in this country in that capacity until 1920, when he returned to England., The funeral took place at the Aramoho Cemetery yesterday morning of the late Mr. Charles Henry Bawatcr, and was attended by members of the Aloutoa and sister Alasonic Lodges. Short services were conducted at deceased’s residence and at the graveside. The cortege, which was a lengthy one bearing striking testimony to the popularity and respect of the late Air. Bowater, halted at the Gonville School where the pupls were lined up on the footpath. The deceased was a former headmaster of the school for many years and was held in high respect .. r parents and scholars alike.
