FEILDING JOCKEY CLUB

SPRING RACE MEETING REVIEW OF PROSPECTS. (By ’’Kestrel.”) With a field pf ten useful handicap performers engaged in the Feilding Cup, set down for decision this afternoon, the Feilding Jockey Club may be accounted well placed to have a successful meeting, for in eaoh event on to-day’s programme the fields are on lines which correspond with the useful Cup field. As usual, the hack fields, both sprint and distance events, consist of the best in commission on the circuit, and in the other races there is some promising talent. The meeting is to be concluded ou Monday, and the fact that no fewer than seventeen horses not engaged to-day have been* nominated for Alon day indicates that there will be plenty to engage the attention of followers of form. The track at Feilding is reported to be in excellent order and the going should be really good. The totalisator will operate on the single-pool system, with dividends on first and second horses in the proportions of 75 and 25 per cent. The intervals between races are approximately 40 minutes. Tlie first event on the programme is the 12.0 WAITUNA HACK HURDLES (Of £100; 14 miles and 130yds.)

Manawatu, who heads the list with U.S, was runner-up each day last year, and his form this season has been good. Sanguine King scored decisively when he won in his initial essay over battens, and twelve months ago he won the Kiwitea Handicap at this meeting. Debut appears to be back to his best form, and a repetition of his Levin form of last Saturday would enable him to account for this stronger field. Kaola is another useful sort, and the Otaki-trained Aiguille may be expected to play a prominent part. Manifesto is a good jumper and Petrarch is also a proved fencer but may find these hurdlers going too fast for him. Hunting Queen disappointed when expected to be prominent at Bulls. Gaswyn may improve on his Levin form. Affliction may be dangerous as he comes from a stable which is generally strong in jumpers. In summing them up, oue must follow recent form and declare for Debut, Kaola and Gaswyn. The maiden race is the 12.40 AORANGI TRIAL PLATE (Of £80; six furlongs.)

This is for horses which have not won a fiat race. Several of the fifteen engaged have been placed, and there are some well-bred horses included. Version is a Chief Ruler filly with three thirds in as many starts this season. Ben Braggie is from the Jefferd stable and has a good reputation. Black Thread is a Gisborne candidate who ran second behind Golden Blonde at the Poverty Bay meeting. Abracadabra did not show up at Levin but may improve. Entheos is a promising Gainscourt gelding carrying Mr. T. A. Duncan’s colours. Garter Red has shown a good deal of promise, and Trimden is trained on the Feilding track, so she must be respected. Merlyn has been several times in the money. Soho has not yet shown good form but will atone later, Erebus beat everything else except the useful Chief Ranger at Waverley. Helios is a halfbrother to Reipar. Trevelyn Hold is another Feilding-trained candidate. It is expected that Ben Braggie, Entheos and Erebus will be among the fancied division. Next comes the principal event, the 1.22 FEILDING CUP (Of £206; 11 miles.

Last year’s winner, Passion Fruit, heads the list with B.IJ, as against the 7.13 he had in the saddle twelve months ago. Two seconds earlier this season may be taken to indicate that Passion Fruit may be expected to play a prominent part to-day. Aga Khan, third last year, does no appeal ou his Waverley running, but he should be able to do better than that. Davistock impressed by his winning effort at Bulls. Vanestep’s New Zealand Cup placing indicates that, this Weathervane mare must be respected in handicap events. Gay Boy has been very consistent and his win at Levin has brought about a rehandicap which still may ’ not prevent him from winning. Rust was the runner-up last year and her track form would lead one to give her a good chance to-day. Werohia won the Hastings Cup last year and is nicely placed to-day. Silk Sox impressed by winning the Waverley Cup on Labour Day and may be the most dangerous lightweight possibilit;. though on the same mark is the Gainscourt gelding Tres Sec. Davistock appeals most, with Rust and Gay Boy also likely to be prominent. Nine are down to contest the 2.4 FLYING HANDICAP (Of £130; «ix furlongs.)

The Spiral-Severe bracket figures first on the list and the combination appears to be a very strong one, though Severe’s failure over seven furlongs at Wanganui was not palau able to her supporters. Spiral has been most consistent in his efforts so far this season and has gone on the right way in his track effort. Whenuakura will be making his reappearance after a lengthy spell from racing. Royal Routine invariably runs a good race at .Good Hunting is useful and The Tiger appears likely to strike form soon. Limulus won at Waverley and if she goes on the right way may develop into a very useful sort. Sunny

Maid has an excellent chance on her present mark. The Spiral-Severe bracket may be preferred to Limulus and Sunny Maid. The youngsters will have their chance in the 2.46 JUVENILE STAKES (Of £120; five furlongs.)

Notium has shown promising form this season, perhaps his best being a second to Gallio at Avondale. Kindheart won in his only start, that being at Trentham, and he should account for to-day’s opponents. Karl was seen at Wanganui, as also was Mirth. Imposture has been galloping well and Laughing Lass is reported to be showing a good deal of promise. Deficit is from T. R. George’s stable and Mazzini is an unraced Chief Ruler geldingtrained by A. E. Neale at Bulls. Larwood is Bodyline’s half-brother. The favourite should be Kindheart, with Notium and Imposture next best. The hack distance event is the 3.28 KOWHAI HACK (Of £100; 1 mile and a distance.)

This is oue of the puzzles placed before investors by the handicapper. Confiscation has run some excellent races in this class of event and will prove hard to beat. Aussie Ba won the maiden race at this meeting last year, and won recently at Masterton. Windward is another in good form, and Ingenuity, King’s Lancer, Darceourt (improving fast), Eara, Waipiro,-Mus-tang and Corroboree comprise the most dangerous division. Regard must be paid, however, to the presence of Middle, Sommerhill and Granville. A trio with good credentials are Confiscation, King's Lancer and Corroboree. The hack sprinters will appear in the 4.10 FITZROY HACK (Of £100; gix furlongs.)

Courtega is reported to be in great nick just now. Lifeguard is smart and Alcides won in impressive style at Levin. Ihas makes a reappearance after a lengthy absence. Quake is another Levin winner, and Collodion, •Colenso, Lady Eka, Weatherstep and the Father’s Choice-Version bracket also must have good chances. The issue may lie between Alcides, Courtega and Quake. The concluding race is the 4.52 KIWITEA HANDICAP (Of £110; seven furlongs.)

Big Book has a recent win at Riccarton to his credit and will be in the running. Midian’s Wanganui wins wili make him one of the favourites. Farmer is a dangerous customer when fresh. Chief Marionette will be backed if she is in good form. Lapel is another with good credentials, but Jubilee Song will appeal more as he has had two recent wins. Glenvane will go well, but Jubilee Song will *be favourite and Midian and Farmer should be next in request. WORKERS AT AWAPUNI GOOD GALLOPS REGISTERED Conditions at Awapuni on Thursday morning w'ere excellent when the candidates for Feilding carried out their final gallops. Although the flags were out in the centre of the course proper, some good times were registered, states the Standard. Dawning Light (Feasey) was the first to essay fast work, the filly running half a mile in 52sec. Lavish (Anderson) appeared to be travelling well within herself in getting to the end of three furlongs in 41i$e‘c, the first furlong occupying 16 sec. Severe (Anderson), who is now showing some of her old form, ran the first two furlongs of a five furlongs task in 26sec., three in 39see., and the full distance in 1.5 2-5. Mirth (Tattcrsall) ran an easy five furlongs in 1.9, the first two furlongs in 27sec., while Jovial Prince (Feasey), who followed, took 1.12 1-5. Wagner (Reed) had the measure of Black Fox (Chisholm) at the «close of a three furlongs flutter, being threequarter?. of a length in front. The colt broke 38sec. for the distance. It was an improved effort on the part of Black Fox. Legatee (Jones) jumped away at the seven furlongs post to run the last six furlongs in 1.17 4-5, after leaving the first three behind in 38 4-ssec. The Posterity colt was finishing on at the end of his task. Corroboree (Jones) made the pace for Round Score (Anderson) in a seven furlongs task, which was accomplished in the smart time of 1.32, the first halfmile taking 53 3-ssec. Corroboree narrowly held his companion off in the run home. Rompalong (Mansfield) slipped over five furlongs in 1. 51-5. It was quite a pleasing effort in view of the fact that he is not usually a good track worker. La. Crown (Feasey) ran from the six to the three furlongs peg in 38sec. This mar? has not lost any of her pace during her long absence from racing. Symcony (Tattersail) is now being speeded up by her mentor and the filly left three furlongs behind in 38sec. She is commencing to build up. Gold Cure (McDonald) led Treasure Hunt (Thomson) throughout in a mile gallop. They ran the first two furlongs in 26 2-ssec., five in 1.6'1-5, and the full distance in 1.48 4-5. Gold Cure i drawing away in the straight. It is apparent that Treasure Hunt is not himself. Bodyline (Anderson) registered a smart effort in running four furlongs in 51 3-ssec. after taking 26see. for the first two. Round Up (Anderson) held Barley

Almond (Reed) in a gallop over half a mile in 51 3-ssec. -The full-brother to Bodyline is approaching racing shape. Princess La Jean (Rae) strode along over six furlongs ia 1.22 4-5, the filly being under a firm hold throughout. King’s Lancer (Feasey) jumped away too soon for Battle Pomp (Tattersail), but they were together at the five furlongs peg, running the next two furlongs in 25 A-ssec. and five in 1.7 3-5. King’s Lancer, who is a lazy track worker, dropped back in the run home A brace of two-year-olds from L. Knapp’s stable. Star Beam (Feasey) and Laggard (Tattersail), displayed promise by slipping over three furlongs in 39see. The former is from the Martian mare Regal Star and the latter from the Gazelev mare Regard, both being by Lavkham. The Gisborne mentor, W. Goscomh, is at present quartered at Awapuni with Good Hunting, Black Thread, Alby, and Summerhill and will remain there till after Christmas. The quartette were galloped on Wednesday. WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB THE SUMMER MEETING CONSECUTIVE DAYS (By “Kestrel”) The Wanganui Jockey Club ’s Cup fixture is to be held on consecutive days in the 1935-36 season, provided the assent of the New Zealand Racing Confereve is forthcoming. At any rate, application has been made for permission to change from Thursday and Saturday, January 30 and February 1, , to the Friday and Saturday. It is understood that this departure from the traditional Thursday and Saturday fixture has been decided on a result of representations from the Marton A. and P. Association to the effect, that racing on the Thursday would clash with the annual Marton Show. The Wtviganui Jockey Club committee readily agreed to the suggestion that Friday would suit all concerned, and it may be that, if the experiment proves a happy one, the committee will in future consider the advisability of racing on Friday and Saturday instead of insisting on the day-between break. Little alteration has been made in the programme for the summer meeting of last season. The Juvenile Handicap distance ha.s been extended from five furlongs to six, but it is still for two-year-olds only. There is no trophy for the hack distance event on the second day of the meeting, so it becomes the Wanganui Hack Handicap, with the stake maintained at £l5O, of which the winner’s share is £l2O. The programme is made up as follows: — First Day Westmere Hack Hurdles, of £110; 1 mile, 41 furlongs. Kai Iwi Maiden, of £80; 5 furlongs. Juvenile Handicap, of £100; six furlongs. Victory Hack Handicap, of £100; 8$ furlongs. Tayforth Hack Handicap, of £110; 7i furlongs. Wanganui Cup, of £250; 1} miles. Flying Handicap, of £125; six furlongs. Petre Hack Handicap, of £100; six furlongs. Second Day Fordell Hack Hurdles, of £110; 1 mile 4} furlongs. Landguard Maiden, of £80; six furlongs. Sedgebrook Juvenile Handicap, of £100; five furlongs. Brunswick Hack Handicap, of £115; furlongs. Wanganui Hack Handicap, of £150; miles. Earle Stakes, of £175; one mile and a distance. Campbell Handicap, of £140; six furlongs. Matarawa Hack Handicap, of £100; five furlongs.
