TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB

MEETING AT ELLERSLIE PROSPECTS TOR TO DAY. (Special to * 'Chronicle. ”)

AUCKLAND, Nov. 29. Some excellent racing should be ween at Ellerslie to-morrow and on Monday on the occasion of the Taka puna Jockey Club’s spring meeting. The fields for the opening day are very satisfactory, the only weak event numerically being that for the two-year-olds, which always thins out at This fixture. An even field of 1U is engaged in the Alison Cup, representative of the best class of handicap horses in the province, and the winner will not be easy to find. One of the best sprint fields seen in the province for some time is that in the Cheltenham Handicap, and all the best hacks arc in the Plate. The course should be ia excellent order and, as hitherto, the club will retain the win-<cd-place betting system. It is almost too much to hope for a repetition of last year’s thrilling contest in the Takapuna Cup, but the material is there to make a real race. Kiltowyn will be assisted by the comparatively ‘•.mall field, for he has worked well enough to suggest that his Riccarton efforts caught him well below his best. Kelly is overdue already, yet he is ail right and may make amends here. Gay Broney will appreciate the drop in weight after Jhikekohe and if he gives of his best—as he will do if the ground is not soft —then he may be one of the hardest to head off. Mnngatoon is always a possibility, while Prince Colossus is improving with racing and is rapable of running a line race. The second half of the handicap has several possibilities. On Parade would i»e one of the prime fancies if he was forward enough, but it is thought that he may need a ra.-e. £ir Abb disputed favouritism with King Key in the Waikato Cup and was beaten by the soft track, so that with more favourable track conditions to-morrow he will be prominent. Miss Lu is an improver who will always go well, but it will be against her that she will not be able to claim an allowance on tdiis occasion. Master Norval is back to his best and the way he wore down Miss Lu last week indicated that he is a decided possibility. Imamint made the pace most of the way at Pukekohe and then finished right up behind the place horses. It is a difficult race to sum ip but it would not occasion surprise f Kiltowyn and Sir Abb were found fighting it out.

The Cheltenham Handicap is not going to be an easy race to win. for the class is high. Jonathan, after his second and third at Ellerslie last month, cannot be ignored, although with a larger field to-morrow he will be thoroughly tested. Impasto is now readv to show his best if in the mood, and Sinking Fund, Boughal, and Star Artist are a formidable ,trio. Rereatu is all the better for his race at Te Rapa and is nicely placed, while the lightweights Solaria and Royal Secret and the bracketed pair, Astarth and < oronis, will be liberally supported. Boughal and Star Artist are a likely pair. The Takapuna Plate, for hacks only, »■» another difficult race to win. This

is the first occasion the penalty clause, 71b. extra for winners of over £250, has been in vogue, and it has succeeded in making the good ones concede weight all round. The best of the unpenalised division is Royal Dance, and he and rooning, Kahapa. Mazir and 1 ray Bit represent good class. The remaining events are going to be well contested. Form horses engaged to-morrow are the following: — 12.00—Melrose Maiden Handicap: Gey Rebel. Madelon, Gienacre. 12.43.—Spring Handicap: Bellkyrian, \ alspear, Gay Egypt. 1.27. —Tiri Hurdles: Dark Marble, Black Marlin, Vai Watcn. 2.12. Alison Cup: Kiltowyn, Hit Abb, Gay Broney. 2.3s.—Cambria Handicap: Surview, Gay Chief, Queen’s Council. 3.42.—Takapuna Plate: Hakapa, Royal Dance, Mazir. 4.2s.—Cheltenham Handicap: Boughal. Star Artist, Astarth - Coronis bracket. s.lo.—Ponui Handicap: King Tut, Huskie, Teddy Boy. Following is the list of acceptors:

PONUI HANDICAP (Of 4130; one mile.)

THE FINAL GALLOPS. ELLERSLIE TRACK WORK. AUCKLAND, Nov. 28. Weather and track conditions were good at Ellerslie this morning for the final gallops in connection with the Takapuna Jockey Club’s spring meeting which opens on Saturday. The course proper, on which the poles were out 00 feet from the rails, was available and No. 3 grass, the tan and the two-year old tracks were also open. Several sound gallops were recorded, among them being those of Crooning, Kiltowyn, Kelly and Tray Biit. On the course proper Chief Emerald and Supreme Ruler reeled off half a mile in 52 l-ssec. It was a good effort and Chief Emerald showed to the most advantage. Red Flame was given an easy six furlongs task and covered the distance in 1.26 2-5. She looks all the better for her races at Pukekohe last Saturday. Tidalia and Enlightenment covered six furlongs in 1.21. The former, who finished in front, went particularly well. Pasha worked lazily over five furlongs in 1.12 4-5. Kelly, Tray Bit, Rereatu and Tybalt were in that order at the conclusion of six furlongs run in 1.20. They ran the first three in 39sec. The first-named pair impressed the most, though Tybalt also shaped well. Teddy Boy, with Persian Lady to assist him over the last six furlongs traversed seven furlongs in 1.34, the final six taking 1.21 1-5. Roman Mascot ran home from the six furlongs post in 1.221. Psychologist, after running the first half-mile in 50 2-ssec., completed a mile in 1.465. Te Broney, after running her first three furlongs in 39 2-ssee., got to the end of six furlongs in 1.21 2-5. Vera Acre and King Mestor finished well in front of Vanners while traversing six furlongs in 1.21 4-5. The first three furlongs took 40 2-ssec. Royal Secret was too good for Hope i five furlongs run in 1.7 4-5. The two-year-olds, Queen Brierly and Summary, reeled off three furlongs in 30 4-ssec., the former showing to more advantage. Master Vaals shaded Captain Bruce over throe furlongs run in 39 4-ssec. Master Vaals has come on nicely in the last few weeks. Maine, who arrived yesterday afternoon from Hastings, was sent over a mile. She ran the first half in 50 2-5 see. and was easing up to complete the journey in 1.55 2-5. After breakfast Valmiut, after running the first three furlongs in 41 2-5 sec., ran 1.36 for the seven. Kiltowyn was to have gone six furlongs, but went away just in front of the seven furlong post to run the last six in 1.19 4-3. He had plenty of pace on when he jumped away, but still he carried a good weight and it was a good performance. The best sprint of the morning over six furlongs was credited to Crooning, who had Prival to assist her. She ran the first three in 38 4-ssec. and completed the task in 1.19 2-5. It was an attractive effort and she is now better than she has previously been. Prival, although beaten, shaped encouragingly for one of his class. On No. 3 grass track Ringshot and an unnamed maiden, both ju R. M. McTavish’s stable, sprinted three furlongs in 37 4-ssec.—a smart performance. Jewelled Girtlie and Gemland were timed to run the last four of five furlongs on the tan in 52 4-ssec. Fleetwind finished in front of Imamint over five furlongs, which occupied 1.7 2-5. They ran the first two in 20 J-ssec., and Fleetwind finished on well. Valspear rau half a mile in 52 3-5 sec. after running the first three furlongs in 38 2-ssec.
