BRITISH WOMEN’S TEAM DEFEAT OF AUSTRALIANS FOURSOMES AT MELBOURNE [By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright] Received Aug. 27, 11.30 p.m. MELBOURNE, Aug. 27. The visiting team of British women golfers easily defeated the Australians in the women’s foursomes championship over 36 holes. It was the visitors’ first appearance in important competitive events in Australia. The leading scores were: Mrs. J. B. Walker and Miss I’am Barton (Great Britain) 82—81—163. Mrs. W. Greenlees and Miss P. Wade (Great Britain) 80-81 —.164. The best Australian score was that of Mrs. Sloan Morpeth (Victoria) and Mrs. S. Tolhurst (Victoria) 86—84 The visitors won by superior length though their putting was not exceptionally good. The second round of the amateur and professional golf championships of Australia to-day resulted: — Amateur Championship Hattersley beat Sloan Morpeth 4 and 3. Ferrier beat A. Jackson 4 and 2. Crook beat Wright 4 and 3. Rymill beat Duffy at the 38th. Professional Championship. McMahon beat Stewart 3 and 2. Richardson beat Gray 1 up. Bolger beat M. Smith 3 and 1. Boorer beat G. Naismith 2 and 1. GOLF AT ROTORUA GOSS QUALIFIES TOP A private message was received in Wanganui last night to the effect that J. Goss had qualified top of 69 players in the Rotorua golf tournament. I. Saunders was also included in the list of those qualifying in the first division.
