INTOXICATION CHARGE

VISITOR TO CITY FINED YOUNG MAN KNOCKED OFF CYCLE Charged, with being in a state of intoxication while driving a motor-car in Victoria Avenue on Monday evening, Kenneth Williams, a visitor to Wanganui,, was fined £25 by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Wanganui Police Court yesterday morning. Williams also had his licence cancelled for 12 months. Sergeant F. C. Harrison stated that defendant came into the Avenue from Liverpool Street at about 30 miles an hour and knocked a young man off a cycle. Fortunately the latter was not seriously injured, but the cycle was badly damaged. The driver of the car pulled up, but went on again, and the young man got in touch with the police, with the result that the car was traced by Constable Mackintosh and the defendant taken to the Police Station, wihere he was examined by a doctor and admitted that he had been drinking gin. In indicting the penalty the magistrate, Mr. J. H. Salmon, remarked that here was a case that might easily have had fatal results. As defendant had not been in trouble before he did not feel inclined to impose imprisonment. Defendant was also ordered to pay merdical expenses £1 Is.
