Tho accidental breaking of a butter box at the Thorndon railway station to-day revealed not butter but tins marked with Chinese characters and filled with a dark viscous substance. Two men duly arrived, signed for the box and paid the freight charge, when tho detectives stepped forward and requested an interview at the police station. There the men were questioned but denied that the sticky stuff was opium. It was treacle, they insisted, and continued so to insist until eventually an official was induced to taste. Common household treacle it proved to be, and there is now considerable spfTiill ion as to its destination and the reason for its strange. packing.
