At, the fortnightly gathering of members of the Wanganui Croquet Club at the bridge afternoon this week there i were live tables in play and a most enjoyable time was spent. On Wednesday afternoon next, August 28, the members of the Women’s Division of thq Farmers’ Union are staging a wool display and handwork and antique exhibits in the W.D.F.U. rooms (AlcGruer’s Buildings). The Mayoress, Mrs. W. J. Rogers, will officiate at the opening, timed for 2.30 ' p.m. A good programme has been arranged and afternoon tea will be provided. Eightieth Birthday. Mrs. Bennie, of Carlton Terrace, Gonville, celebrated her 80th birthday this week and was the guest of honour at a gathering of relatives and friends for the occasion at the home of her , brother, Air. R. Kirk, and Airs. Kirk. The birthday cake, adorned with candles, was cut by Airs. Bennie and the toast to her health was responded to with musical honours. Numerous telegrams and letters were received. Airs. Bennie was born in New Plymouth on August 21, 1855, but has lived all her life in Wanganui. Among the guests were Air. and Airs. R. Kirk, Aliss Kirk, Air. and Mrs. Noel Kirk, Airs. \U. Kirk and Air. F. Kirk, of Auckland, Mr. and Airs. Henley, Miss Henley, Air. and Airs. E. Moore, Airs, and Aliss Wells, Air. and Airs. Claperton, Air. and Mrs. R. Hewetson, Airs. Allen and Aliss Joan Cooper. Children’s Concert At the entertainment given by a number of young people on Thursday, in aid of the Khandallah Babies’ Home, there were present parents and several friends including Airs Empson (Hawke’s Bay), Airs ,T. Allen, Airs Al?urice Campbell, Airs F. L. Peck, Airs E. G. Roddy, Airs E. Cole, Airs Vaughan, Airs G. W. Currie, Misses Currie (2), Airs R. Brown, Airs Gordon Williams (Hawke’s Bay), Misses Stanford (2), Mrs R. Hatrick, Mrs 11. Collins, Mrs W. A. Izard, Airs D. Latham, Airs Bernard Cave, Airs W. Wilberfoss, Airs D, Afason, Airs Webster (Wellington).

Fancy Dress Party A very enjoyable plain and fancy dress party, arranged by the committee of the Christ, Church Girl Guide company and Brownie puck in aid of funds, was held at the Savage Club Hall last evening. Under the direction of the officers of the company an entertaining programme was carried out. The young people, mostly in fancy costumes, danced the polka, fox-trot, military two-step, the waltz, and grand n]d Duke of York. After the grand march, the game Jolly Miller was indulged in. Several items were given by pupils of Miss Hughes Johnson and Miss shir!ey Cramond.

Followed community’ s i n g* n g then supper for the tinies to make it a real party. Games included “Ninepins," “Musical Flops," and in the dance programme were Monte Carlo and chain waltzes. Miss Alice Rogers and Nita Merrie gave items. At 9.15 there were refreshments for everyone and the evening finished at 10 p.m. with the singing of the National Anthem. There were a number of parents and friends present and all spent a happy evening. Social Evening at Gonvillc. The usual weekly’ function was held in St. Peter’s Parish Hall on Tuesday. There was a large attendance and the proceedings throughout were most enjoyable. 'l'he “500" prizes were won by' Mrs. Hunwick and Mr. Symonds, consolations going to Mrs. Chenerv ami Mrs. Davis. Specials were won by Mrs. Ruffe and Mrs. Swift. While the cards were in progres sdancing was carried ou in the main hall, which had been beautifully decorated, and excited much admiring comment. The floor was in excellent order and filled to capacity with happy dancers till midnight. Splendid music was provided and Mr. Thurlow' carried out the duties of M.C. in his usual capable manner. Novelty dance competitions and Monte Carlos were won by Miss Allpress and Air. Winter. Miss Christensen and Mr. Reese, Mrs. Swift and Miss Healey. On behalf of the committee Mr. Orchard thanked those present for their much appreciated support.
