Wanganui Tracks. Wanganui horses continue to do in teresdng work in prepara lien for spring racing, a*.d some fast gallops may bp expected before the en 1 ot the month. Or. Tuesday morning, under excellent weather conditions, Entail ran the two furlongs up the straight on number one tracks in 27 2-ssec. Miiiian was wide out in doing three furlongs in 41 3-ssec. Merry Ruler ian down from the four-furlong pest to the quarter in 25 3-ssee., and was then eased up to stride home comfortably. The Image, Corowa and Abracadabra were associated over four furlongs ii: 53 l-sscc., the trio finishing in the order name- 1 .. Reipar, having his first pipe-opener since his return to work, ran home from the quarter-mile post in 27 r»-ssec Several others did useful pucework. Off to Sydney. New Zealand's leading jockey. L. J. Ellis, and his brother, A. E. Ellis, have left for Sydney. The length of their stay in Australia will depend on results. If they should do well in Sydney, they will go on to Melbourne for the spring racing there. Retired. Cricket Bat has been sent back to the Stonyhurst Stud, and no further attempt will be made to train him. He will probably be given stud duly during the coming season. Hurdle Races. The Masterton Racing Club has de cided to substitute hurdle races of one and a-half miles for the high weight handicaps on each day at the October meeting. Sold for Southland. Sir Charles Clifford ha s disposed of Horns Reef, whn ran two promising races last week, and the Day Comet four-year-old will in future be trained in the Southland district. Extending his Patronage. King George has been added to the owners who have more than one trainer. He recently sent his two-year old filly Canvas' (Solario —Scuttle) from W. R. Jarvis’ training establishment at Newmarket, to that of H. L. L. Cottrill, at Seven Barrows, Lam bourn. The filly was not doing well at Newmarket, and it was thought a change of environment might benefit her. From N.Z. Blood. New Zealand has a particular interest in th© dings of Beamish Buy and The Riff, winner and third horse respectively in the Adelaide Guineas on Saturday. Beamish Boy is by Windbag fro mthe Dominion-bred Roseglow, by Absurd from Rose Queen, a sister to The Thorn and a half-sister to Ruanui, Thespis, and Mananui. Roseglow was herself a successful race mare for Mr. Jolly, who purchased. her at the Trentham sales for 1000 guineas. She was bred by Mr. G. M. Currie and was one of the last of the Absurds to be sent into the sale ring. On the occasion of her purchase Mr. Jolly’s agent had a contending bidder in the late Mr. R. J. Mason, who was calling for the late Mr. G. I). Greenwood. Jumps at Flemington. The mishaps on {Saturday caused the V.R.C. executive to end the controversy whether the logs c-n the Flemington ►Steeplechase course should be replaced with brushes, in this connection it is interesting to recall that at one time there was a water jump opposite the Maribyrnong stand. This was in Adam Lindsay Gordon’s day. The jump did not gain much favour and was eventually abolished, as the logs will be in future. Later Mod nee Valley experimented with a similar idea, but the jump caused a good deal of trouble. Horses frequently landed in water and fell, giving their riders a “ducking” if nothing worse. It was good fun for the onlookers, but jockeys did not take the same view. Tenterden’s Brother. The Riff, who ran third in Saturday’s Adelaide Guineas, is a fullbrother to Tcntcrden, and he cost Mi. Jolly 600 guineas at the Trentham sales eighteen months ago. He was a winner cf two races last season, and in his second success, at the back end of the term, he indicated that he had plenty of determination, for not only did he come from the rear of his field but he carried 8.12 on a wet track. If Beamish Boy should now leave the South Australian Derby to him and his other stablcmate (High Meadow; Mr. Jolly would still have two likely sorts for the Morphettville classic. Unruly Race Crowds. The Paris correspondent of tihe Horse and Hound says he has frequently mentioned how unruly lhe ciowd becomes on French racecourses when anything happens with which they do not agree. Last summer fihey devastated the centre of Longchamps racecourse with fire, and caused all sorts of destruction. Recently, at a country meeting, for a similar reason, after two- animals had been left at the post, they took possession of th-e course, and it was three hours before they could be got under control and racing continued. As a result the last event was not run c-ff until 9 o’clock at night. France, like England, must have a long twilight. There was a humorous happening at, a meeting last month. Ail the runners in a race took the wrong course, and the stewards, probably fionr fear of a demonstration, upheld Ihe result.
