WAR OFFICE PURCHASES

MARGARINE IN PREFERENCE TO BUTTER DAIRY BOARD DISCLOSURE [ Per Press Association. ] HAMILTON, Aug. 20. That the British Army, Navy and Air Force are supplied with margarine in preference to Empire butter, was a fact revealed by Mr C. ?. Agar, deputychairman of the Dairy Produce Board, addressing suppliers of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company today. In reply to a question as to whether the British forces were supplied with New Zealand butter, Mr Agar said that the board bad made enquiries into the position and had been informed that tho ration consisted of margarine. It was, however, hoped that this policy on tho part of the War Office might be altered, and all was being done to capture the potential market. Tho secretary of the board, Mr T. Brash, added that a letter received from the War Office implied that butter was considered too expensive to purchase for rations. A remit was passed urging the Dominion Conference to consider the possibility of having butter included in the rations of the British Army, Navy, and Air Force, and to approach the British Government with a view to having the margarine issue substituted by butter.
