OIL-BURNING VESSELS

END MOSQUITO PEST. MONTREAL, July 1. Inland cities have learned to control tho mosquito nuisance by application of oil to the breeding grounds of these pests of springtime. In Montreal and Quebec and along the St. Lawrence between these two cities the same immunity is secured, free of cost, from the oilburning ships that ply tho river. A naturalist explains that these vessels leave a residue of oil. on the water. Some of it is washed ashore, it seeps into the soil percolates into low and swampy areas, gradually has driven the mosquitoes elsewhere. Hereabouts the mosquito tribe seems virtually extinct. The same authority is studying the t effect of oil on fish. He said there seemed a scarcity of pickerel in Lawrence waters, but he had noticed a marked increase in eels.
