CONSTABLE INJURED. HASTINGS, Jan. 19. A disturbance in which some mem- ! bers of a Maori shearing gang from j Taupo participated, and in which ConI stable A. Sutherland suffered a severe ' facia] injury, occurred in Heretaunga street shortly after six o’clock last evening. Arising out of the fracas, two young Maoris appeared in the [Hastings Magistrate’s Court to-day be- ; fore Mr. A. Rosenberg, J.P. One of them, Lockie Sullivan, was charged with behaving in a disorderly manner. with using obscene language, and with resisting Constable Suptherland. The other, Walter Pohi, wa.< charged with assaulting Constable Sutherland so as to cause actual bodily harm. Senior-Sergeant MacNamara said that while the constable was on the ground endeavouring to place Sullivan under arrest, Pohi went to his mate’s assistance. As a result of being kicked in the face, the constable was admitted to the hospital. This morning the medical superintendent had reported that the constable’s condition was dangerous. The senior-sergeant then asked that both accused be remanded until next Saturday. In the case of Sullivan, he said, the police would not oppose bail.
